The Civic is a building that demonstrates just how far Barnsley has come in recent years.
Despite living only 15 minutes from the centre of Barnsley I have not had, or made, cause to visit for what now feels like much too long. The centre of town has been transformed and The Civic is one wonderful example of the modernisation of the area as a whole.
The Civic contains a spacious and peaceful exhibition area that, like most gallery's, is minimalist is design allowing the changing exhibitions to take centre stage.
At my time of visit the exhibition room housed the BEST ART VINYL 2017, which is also simultaneously been shown in Bologna and Budapest. Now in it's 12th year the unique award is a celebration of the best vinyl artwork to have been produced in 2017 and displays a shortlist of the 50 nominees vying for the title. The exhibition also displays past winners of the award from the likes of The Last Shadow Puppets, Thom Yorke and The Klaxons.
An interesting part of the exhibition is where members of the public are given the opportunity to bring in their favourite vinyl artwork for it to be displayed, as part of the exhibition, complete with a brief description from the owner of what they like about it and why it means so much to them.
Truth be told, I almost walked straight past The Civic initially mistaking it for some modern office space. My curiosity was rewarded ten fold in the most delightful way upon entering and I encourage you to take the same approach and visit...
Read moreDecember 13th. Very nice well equipped venue Watched a great show. Very enjoyable however . Poor COVID understanding. This is not an in the night staff issue. They were doing what they were told to do . Management --- Poor ventilation. Saw many in audience fanning themselves. This tells me it was too hot. People attending with me also said it was hot No draught detected. I was too hot & only wearing a T shirt. The place was rammed with people. Some taking drinks into the hall. THIS MEANS IF THEY HAVE A DRINK THEY DON'T NEED TO WEAR A MASK ! most people did wear a mask. Management should stop people taking drinks from the bar into the entertainment hall. If they want to drink, Stay in the bar. No staff monitoring the number of persons entering the toilets ! Lots of people going up & down stairs & not using the hand gel. No staff monitoring that. Even after they've had hands on the handrail all the way up & all the way down ! Didn't see any sanitising of handrail. On the way out it was raining. Crowds of people just outside the exit sheltering from the rain. Means many waiting at the door inside to get out. That area is small. People too close. COME ON MANAGEMENT -...
Read moreThis was re written today as my original review was not really well written due to feeling unwell at the time of writing while at the event. The civic seemed very disorganized for a concert we attended on Sunday the 8th of May. It said on the information and ticket the event / concert started at 4pm, what it didn't say was this was to give you time to look at the art work and the actually concert didn't start till 5pm. This also gave some customers who had paid an extra £10 on the next ticket price band the same hour to have cheese and wine which was not included on the basic ticket price. We were all in the same area which made it feel very uncomfortable. If we had known we would have arrived nearer 5pm. This would have given us time to see the art works and not have such a long wait to...
