I love this place because it's small and friendly, catering for kids as well as art buffs, with a cute little cafe too. The exhibitions give you insights into the collectors lives as well as the artists, and a sense of what life was like for well to do Victorians with a sense of public duty. But I mostly like it because it has two large portraits of local characters from the working class, Peggy Airey and Watter Joe. The artist, Abel Hold, was my great-great-great grandfather, and these must have been a labour of love.

Free to visit but accepts donations. Lovely little gallery in Barnsley. Has shop, café, attractive patio garden and additional upstairs gallery. Friendly staff. When I visited they had an exhibition upstairs by blacksmith, Sam Sherborne, very skilled and humorous pieces. I can highly recommend the café, with its homemade creations, the cakes are totally delicious. There is a seated patio area with an extended garden with a few more exterior sculptures, bird feeding stations and a living wall of plants. Worth a visit.

Absolutely gorgeous place to visit! Came with my toddler and there was plenty for him to do. The kids corner was so comfortable and made our day. The members of staff are really friendly and came out of their way to come say hello and make us feel welcome. Will definitely be recommending and coming back.

I 1st visited this gallery quite recently on my lunch break (college) Although I am originally from Darfield, I've spent the majority of my life away from the area. After moving back home I've been met with some massive changes to the barnsley town centre.

However I'm beginning to finally discover parts of Barnsley not currently known to me when I was younger. This gallery did not disappoint! And it's brought to the surface of wanting to find out more about my heritage and Barnsleys. Being an avid artist/enthusiasts I'm keen to return to the gallery soak up some more of barnsleys hidden history.

The cafe is also quite delightful, having tasted one of their...

Really enjoyed looking around this gallery today. There was an exhibition of photos that made me laugh out loud and the permanent collection is also very impressive with a couple of pieces by Atkinson Grimshaw which are really beautiful and haunting. The Cooper put great exhibitions on for children sometimes too so look out for those. The recent Elmer exhibition was fabulous and my 2 and 4 year old spent a happy couple of hours interacting with it. Nice cafe with outdoor seating in a pleasant courtyard for the warmer days. Unusual and unique gifts are also available...

Visiting The Cooper Gallery was a delightful experience! From the moment we walked through the doors, we were greeted with an array of captivating artwork that truly showcased the talent and creativity of a diverse array of artists. The gallery's ambience was welcoming and conducive to appreciating each piece, and the staff were incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the art on display. Whether you're a seasoned enthusiast or just looking for a unique cultural experience, I highly recommend a visit to discover the beauty and inspiration within the...
