Tucked away beside Edgbaston Reservoir in Birmingham, the Dhamma Talaka Peace Pagoda is a tranquil gem and a striking example of Burmese architecture in the UK. Established in 1998, this Theravada Buddhist site is part of the Birmingham Buddhist Vihara and serves as both a place of worship and a centre for teaching and meditation.
From the moment you approach the pagoda, it’s clear this is a special place. The octagonal base is adorned with images of 28 Buddhas, symbolising the depth and continuity of Buddhist teachings. Two large guardian lions flank the gabled entrance, a traditional feature in Burmese temples, adding to the sense of authenticity and reverence.
The pagoda’s name—Dhamma Talaka, meaning “Reservoir of Teaching”—is a nod to both its spiritual purpose and its serene location near the water. Inside and out, the atmosphere is one of peace and reflection, attracting not only Buddhists but also curious visitors and architecture enthusiasts.
In recent years, particularly in 2023, the pagoda has undergone careful restoration in preparation for its 25th anniversary. This has included repairs to the spire and work to address water ingress, ensuring the structure remains sound and visually striking for generations to come.
Whether you're seeking a quiet space for contemplation or simply looking to explore one of Birmingham's more unique cultural landmarks, the Dhamma Talaka Peace Pagoda offers a deeply enriching experience. It’s a testament to the city’s diversity and a peaceful haven in the midst...

Upon exiting the room, we were putting our shoes back on and one of the monks shouted, "go and eat, there is lots of food to eat, you must eat!"... Quite timid and nervous we walked into a room at the back where loads of people were eating, a buffet service of oriental, home cooked food. People of all backgrounds, enjoying and eating food. After eating we went back to the shrine room and said a little prayer, we gave a donation (you should do this, it was well worth it). What a surreal experience, highly urge you to pay a visit....
