Visiting on a Tuesday to see the current exhibition, I was informed in a very cursory way by the member of staff on reception that the exhibition was closed.
I was told that"We are open Wednesday to Saturday from 12 to 5 pm, and till 4 pm on Sunday," which I think for a heavily publicly and council funded organisation is extremely poor.
To be open only 34 hours a week is hardly the way to "promote the education of the public in the understanding and appreciation of the arts."
It appears that Spike Island is just about Spike Island. Yet another narcissistic arts institution whose visions are superficial and self-serving.

Read more'I am making art' workshop. I went to the workshop with my 8 year old son and we loved the venue, thought the cafe was excellent and I really enjoyed my creative efforts. I think adults and younger children got a lot out of the session. However, my son was too old to play unselfconsciously with the materials but too young to feel confident devising his own project and I think he would have benefitted from a worksheet of ideas or some kind of a 'challenge'.
