Had a lovely few hours in Herne Bay yesterday, weather was wonderful & so were the fish & chips 10/10 from Star Fish & Chip shop 😋 - run by Ismail, the friendliest owner I've ever met & chatted to - He told me he'd lived in 10 towns in UK & he's settled in HB for 15 years & said it's the friendliest of towns to live. This was lovely to hear as my family hail from HB back in the 40's. If you like WWII history there's a nice statue to the east of the town of Sir Barnes Wallace of 'Dambuster fame). Amy Johnson is also commemorated with a statue on the front as she met her demise by crashing her DeHavilland plane off the coast - a mystery surrounds her death & one such report said that she was shot down by friendlies during WWII as she failed to give the correct radio reply! Reculver Fort can be seen further east up the coast from HB, which is worth a visit as it was a Roman encampment 2000 years ago! Enjoy your day in...
Read moreA wonderful piece of well maintained local history on the edge of the tidal "harbour" formed by the necessary rock sea defences. I would really like to view the vaulted foundations. In their own way they are probably as magnificent as the Tower. Unusually, the clock is fully functional and is surprisingly accurate. It can be heard "chiming" from quite a distance when the wind is in the right direction. I was most disappointing to discover the Web Cams a the top are down due to software problems. Read moreI used to live in Herne bay and often return for walks along the sea front with my mum. If you don't mind the seagulls and motorcycles the clock tower is a good place to perch while having either fish and chips or an ice cream, or if you really want, both ! Some of the shops on the sea front really need some TLC to make it look better, but there are plenty of places to get some refreshments.
