Ate here today as fancied fish and chips and needed it to be coeliac friendly, which Makcaris is, though very limited. Very disapopointed though. The food was nothing special. There were seven of us, two had fish, one with chips one without. Getting the fish on its own was hard work. Makcaris have a take away chip shop next door to their main restaurant. If we'd gone in there, we could've ordered a piece of fish on it's own, no problem. But as we were eating in, not so simple, it was possible, but at a price. The chips could've done with a few more minutes cooking too, and for the price, I expected much better. £18 for gluten free fish and chips. The fish was brought out in acceptable time, the remaining five meals though took a further 25 minutes but which time the fish was cold. According to our server, many people came in at the same time and the kitchen got backed up with orders, but looking round, the place was only a little over half full. People we noticed had come in after us were eating and leaving before our food was brought out. The manager (I assumed) came to speak to us and he told us the orders had been sent to wrong place (they have one kitchen and one take away) where did they send it? and how difficult is it, upon realising you have an order meant for the other place, to get it a few metres to them? We were offered ice cream or waffles as an apology. We asked for some money off the bill (which they ask you pay on advance of putting the order through to the Kitchen) but despite modern technology a refund was not possible (apparently), and although we sat and waited a good 10 minutes after finishing our meals, no-one came over to take any further orders. We left in disgust without having our apology desserts. Our previously friendly server remained firmly behind the counter until we left, then the moment we were out the door, cleared the table. This place is overpriced for what you get, I can only assume they cater their business to the holiday maker and day trippers from London who have more money than sense. They film parts of the sitcom Kate and Koji in Herne Bay, given the choice, I know where I'd choose to...
Read moreWe were very disappointed in the service and especially the lack of willingness for the 3 staff members to assist. As my wife is a wheelchair user we found a seat that was to the side between the main restaurant and fish and chips counter (next to the only accessible door). We sat down perused the few menus that were on the table fish and chips and desert. Knowing full well that all day breakfast is served with a BOGOF offer. ...And we waited … and waited. Finally I got up to ask a staff member for a menu for my wife and he shoved a fish and chip menu in my hand. I requested the full menu. He pointed to the big display one behind the counter. I figured it is an order at the counter setup. I waited for a while in the queue with one ahead. Only to be rudely told that the all day breakfast offer is only until 11. We got up and left. — The offer is on the window however the tiny fine print states until 11 and with the order of a hot drink. Speak about misleading advertising that can be seen from the other side of the street. Would we recommend this place? Certainly not if you actually want any...
Read moreWent here because we used to come here often. Very dissapointed...change is not always for the good..no longer the popular eatery it once was (service with a smile, and good reasonably priced food). Now it is greasy spoon quality with Michelin prices. We ordered haddock and chips, it came on a tray (no plate) ehich slid all over the place when you cut the fish. One slice of bread and butter was a pound, one small portion of mushy peas £2, the staff struggled to make a latte, and we were bombarded with fruit flies as we ate. The toilets were adorned with cobwebs, and the toilet roll was sitting on a wet floor. The ice cream themed desserts looked lovely but at £10 to £15 a portion you may expect Gordon Ramsey to wheel them out, alas it wasnt Gordon who was swearing but the poor guy who picked up the bill. The owners also run the cafe come ice cream parlour on the esplanade..they would do well to remember this is a day out at Herne Bay not the Isle of Capri. Seriously, if your hard earnt cash is burning a hole in your pocket, there are a lot of nicer and more reasonable eateries to coose from at this delightful seaside town, take your time and shop around, chill out and enjoy your day...instead of feeling youv just...
