Modern Two , also known as the Dean Gallery. Always a great place to go for exhibitions and /or food. I had lunch here with my daughter, then spent some time exploring their current exhibition on collage (cut and paste) and of course admired good old Vulcan (the iron giant inside the café space) and the reconstructed artist's studio of Eduardo Paolozzi, which is still an intriguing mess. Entry is free, but there is a charge to see some of the exhibitions, unless you're a member. I'm currently a member, which means I don't have to spend hours 'making the most of the entry charge' and can pop in for a short while, check out the whole exhibition fairly quickly and then come back as often as I like to explore in more depth, or not! Also of course membership supports the national galleries and the arts, so let's you into exhibitions at other museums/galleries too. What's not to like? The food in the cafe is good, including a small but thoughtful choice of veggie, vegan and gluten free dishes. Their support for varies disabilities is very good, check the website for details. If you're physically disabled, you can park at the back and get in on level flooring to take the lift to any level. Accessible toilets are available on the lower level as well. Floor plans available on the website. There's easy public transport, again check...
Read moreIn Edinburgh and specifically Modern Two, I had the pleasure of leveraging the accessibility of spaces that hold art galleries and their subsequent programs e.g. shops, resource centres (the Reading Room as they call it) and even the beautiful accompanying views both inside and looking out – with one of Jencks’ renowned landscapes.
Pleased to have caught “Decades: The Art of Change (1900-1980)” in August ‘23, with works reflecting societal change of respective decades: war-time scarcity pushing creativity to its limits and beyond, optimism and realism that came out of post-war decades, and societal stability seeing the emergence of playful and more experimental art.
The exhibition hosts reputable works of Donald Judd, Salvadore Dali, Yayoi Kusama, and Piet Mondrian, among many others.
The gallery is also permanently home to a recreation of Sir Eduardo Paolozzi’s studio filled with sculptures and his art-making tools curated with such a humane touch, almost...
Read moreThe Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art Two certainly worth a visit. The gallery, its architecture, the manicured gardens and sculptures, the Escher inspired maze, the magic man-sized cubical mirror, the café & gift shop… Not my first time there as I attended several exhibitions (a remarkable curated Rene Magritte one, I recall). This time visit was prompted by one of my favs, Maurits Cornelis Escher, top-of-the-class graphic artist of all times!!! His uber-famous impossible constructions & compositions as Sky & Water, Reptiles, Ascending Descending and Relativity are waiting for you… Modern Two also houses a replica of Leither Eduardo Paolozzi’s Studio, the “Surrealism and the Marvellous” with works of Dalí, Magritte, Ernst and many more. Highly recommended for art lovers and...
