I was so excited to try vegan fish and chips, but the staff member who served me was so condescending and rude from the moment I entered the store that it ended up being one of the worst experiences I had in Edinburgh.
She was almost hostile in her passive aggressive tone, not wanting to explain what some of the options were (like when I wanted to clarify whether 'supper' meant chips were included) and rolling her eyes when I ordered a meal deal (telling me with annoyance "We don't hAvE a meal deal"... when it was listed on their board).
Service and food are two separate things, so I still had hope – but to no avail. The option I wanted (vegan fish) wasn't available, so I got the vegan calamari. That was ok, but it was just deep-fried mushrooms, and needed more nori in the batter to give it a touch of oceanic flavour.
The chips, however, were outright bad, which was very surprising. A few reviewers on here have mentioned they don't taste fresh, and even though they had just been cooked, they didn't – they tasted stale somehow, and were kind of dry and powdery.
The drink I got, which was advertised as a thyme, rosemary, and lavender blend, was actually mostly cinnamon, and not tasty in the slightest. The chocolate had been left out in the heat and had gone white in parts. And although I ordered vegan tartar sauce, none was provided – and neither was the vinegar I'd asked for on the chips – meaning I had to make my way through the stale chips without any flavour (and also not enough salt).
For the amount I paid, absolutely none of it was worth it, and I unfortunately wouldn't go back to give...
Read moreI was a visiting tourist in Haymarket, Edinburgh. And I decided to stop by with a friend to pick up some lunch.
The only person working completely ignored us on entry for about 10 minutes. Eventually he took our order, but then another 10 minutes later he asked for our order again like he hadn't taken it the first time.
The man seemed to be a very, very slow worker, who wasn't approachable or inviting and definitely seemed to be away with the fairies. For that reason my friend and I just politely chatted amongst ourselves and didn't want to pressure the man whatsoever.
He randomly downsized the size of our portion box for.no reason, which we didnt bother challenging him on. Again I think we mutually assumed he'd forgotten the order again, and we didn't want to argue over trivial matters.
But the resulting food just summed up the overall negative experience. The batter and chips were soggy. And the food gave me an upset stomach within a matter of hours.
I really wouldn't recommend this place. There might be a much nicer Fish & Chips shop in the nearby area so would recommend you find somewhere else. Sadly I wasn't in Edinburgh long enough to try...
