I spent a lovely Saturday morning at the Georgian House. The lady working in the entrance (1st July) was super welcoming and friendly, and very enthusiastic about the house and starting my tour.
The film on the 2nd floor starts the tour off nicely with some historical context. Then the small gallery has some very interesting portraits ftom the period, accompanied by actors' recordings as the subjects.
There are some fantastic things to see here, not limited to the original barrel organ, tea caddies, kitchen hearth and medicine chest (with genuine items still inside). You get a real sense of the Georgian home and the family who lived there.
This is an interesting place for anyone to visit, but particularly so if you're a history enthusiast or very into the Georgian period. The guides posted around the house are fantastically knowledgeable, providing tons of info if you are interested, and even delving into their reference materials to find a particular fact or date you're interested in. I was very impressed by everyone I spoke to. I think they were also very adaptable, with fun or surprising facts for the casual visitor, and more in-depth observations for those who wanted to know more about the history.
It would be wonderful if the funds could be raised to prepare and open up the attic rooms at some point in the future, I'd love to come back and see those.
I did the self-guided tour, but with so many helpful guides around the house, I don't know much I would have missed from the...

2017: Half an hour from NTS property Newhailes easily accessible up the A1 and bonus of free parking on Easter Monday. If you can find a spot there's parking on Charlotte Square right outside. This property has room cards and room guides not guided tours. There's an introductory video with actors presumably designed to appeal to children as well as adults but interesting nonetheless. Great top room on the house's inhabitants over time. Accessible and very courteous guides, knowledgeable about the property, the era and much else. A lovely team.
Despite its elegance the property is child-friendly. There is a children's trail, also text-free object finding flashcards, takeaway activities like word searches, a children's "hands on" room at the top of the house which includes dressing up and children are positively encouraged at reception to ask questions of the...
Read moreIt is really a hidden jewel in town. This place wasn’t recommended in any of the guides I consulted for things to do in Edinburgh and got here only thanks to a local girl’s advice. What I loved most was the brilliant mind of the volunteers I encountered in each room of the house: special people with kind hearts and a very professional attitude. They put me at ease and told me incredible stories about the lifestyle of the period. I learnt a lot and went out full of gratitude. So thank you for your daily effort and I recommend everybody who’ll read my review to go and visit the Georgian house. You won’t be disappointed: everything is cured in detail. And please have a chat with the guides: they are plenty of interesting knowledge to share and it is all included in the ticket! A special mention to the elegant and sweet old lady who supervised the living room on the first floor next to the drawing room: I can not remember her name but I’ll cherish our conversation for the...
