Martlesham Heath Control Tower was built in 1917 during the early days of the Air Corps, then RAF. The airbase was already active & established during the rush to defend the nation, leading up to the Battle of Britain. For a period during WW2, Martlesham Heath airbase was occupied by USAF aircrews. The Control Tower is very well preserved & can always be appreciated from outside, even when closed. Unfortunately, because of development of the rest of what was the airbase, the building's setting has lost its context. Marker stones placed around the original airfield are still in-situ, as are some outbuildings. The Control Tower remains as the historically most important main building. It was at Martlesham Heath that emigre Russian Prince Obolensky, was sent to serve as a volunteer pilot during WW2. He was killed on-site when his Hawker Hurricane crashed on landing in 1940. (A monument dedicated to the 24 year old can be found in Cromwell Square; he was buried in Ipswich...
