Appley Beach is a great destination for a day out. The contrast between the golden beach (presumably this is where Derek Sandy was singing about!) and the lush green of the spaces on the other side of wide and flat walking/cycling paths is beautiful.
There’s not one but two paths and plenty of benches with shelters adorn them both. There’s also plenty of cafes and also toilets if needed.
The beach is beautifully Sandy near the paths and then rockier near the sea so plenty of everything for all kinds of kids (and grown ups!)
The car park is enormous (if a tad smelly as the water treatment works are below it) though it’s only 10 minutes to walk from the pier and the ferries/hovercraft.
On a summer’s day you could be anywhere in the world, though the beautiful folly is a steadfast reminder of where you are.
Watch out for the incoming tide as the beach is so flat beyond the ridge and it comes in quickly. Watch out for the sandbanks too!
The view of Portsmouth over the Solent is nice and you can see much further east on a clear day.
Come here for the day and you...
Read moreLovely beach, ten mins walk from the hovercraft. We hired a parasol and two deck chairs from the ryde beach hire which was located right in the middle of appley beach. Deckchairs were £4.50 each all day and the parasol was £5 or £6. They also did kayak and paddle board hire and were VERY reasonable. £6 for half an hour on a kayak which was brilliant! Not much to choose from for food and drinks, we really struggled so I recommend taking a picnic and just getting drinks from the small rnli shop which was a couple of minutes walk. There is a cafe called the deli and you had to book and it was fully booked when we got there. If you carry on around the corner there is a pub called the boat house which we would have gone to if we had found it first. Appley beach is perfect, great Sandy beach and...
Read moreThe beach was very clean and the sand was a lovely colour. It was a sunny afternoon and there were clear views over to Portsmouth. You could sit and watch the ships, ferries and hovercraft & even hear the train rattling across Ryde pier. There were small cafés at either end of the beach plus the tower (a folly) along the footpath. Nearby are the remains of an old military installation and you can explore or even walk over the top of the...
