The swimming pool is great as they have a kids section with a structure which acts as a waterfall. The pool is quite big and there is also a slide which is simple but still very popular. They also have membership cards for children under 18 so they can swim free. You have to take shoes off before going into the changing rooms but they could get stolen as many people leave them at the entrance (so take with you and put in locker). Overall very good staff and site :)

Not very clean! Same stains on shower walls for weeks. I found a huge cockroach 🪳 in one. Hair clumps in showers help block the run-away regularly.Changing rooms are always scruffy and last week my cubicle was blessed with a mound of detritus including a nappy giving off an unholy stench... Some toilet seats have been loose for ages. However! This is the only pool in Hove and the water looks clean and the staff are friendly. Reasons to be cheerful! 😊

For 50 pounds a month of your hard earned money you can expect not to be able to have a shower after the gym, you can also be sure that there will be numerous machines out of order. The aroma of the gym toilets is also something pretty disgusting. Then when you try and raise these issues with the center. They dont care and dont bother responding. Keep up the solid work guys!

Great gym and surprisingly very modern! The centre is great although needs a major refurbishment. The swimming pools are dated and could be easily refurbished in the exiting building. . The reception area is ok and the carpet it is horrible and one day will be trip hazard. All needs to be done to the reception area is new carpet and paint the walls a better colour, get rid of the horrible 'box' type thing that the receptionists sit in and replace it with proper style desks! Only a few hundred pounds needs to be spent on that! The teaching pool is ok and doesn't need refurbishing. The main pool could be better laid out; have two pools, a proper swimming section that isn't linked with the other 'splash around' section.

The outside of the building is a mess with the old entrance to a underground car park that could be demolished, and old building right next to the King Alfred (between the car park) that has graffiti all over it and also should be demolished and use that land as an extension to the car park or link it up with the existing building to make as an extra swimming pool, gymnastics room. The ball room is very dated and could be used as an extra sports hall, gymnastics room etc.

I don't think that the designs for the new King Alfred fit in at all with the other buildings around it and need to be thought about in further detail or refurbish the existing building. The reception area is ok and the carpet it is horrible and a trip hazard. Well worth a visit but beware of it...

The hygiene standards at Freedom Leisure Centres are subpar, and the staff seem to lack adequate training, displaying a general lack of engagement and assistance. The condition of Portslade Sports Centre is particularly concerning, implying a significant management issue. It is my hope that when the new sports centre is established, the Brighton and Hove Council carefully considers the suitability of granting Freedom Leisure the license to operate it. Staff member was rude to me causing be to complain and cancel my membership, resulting in Freedom Leisure attempting to smear me and blacken my name and refusing my request to cancel my membership but instead banning me so as to save face and make themselves look good. I've had the manager of King Alfred Leisure Centre lie about me in order to save his reputation. South Downs Leisure on the other hand seem to be friendly, efficient and well trained, even welcoming me using my name, something King Alfred never do, they don't even look up and only speak to you to tell you it's time up. Don't use King Alfred Leisure Centre at all is my advise. Not unless someone else takes it over....
