Sidwell fish chips & kebab — Attraction in Exeter

The only reasons I have been to this place multiple times is the lack of options for Fish n Chips in my area during Covid-19 lockdown and that it is in a convenient location for where I am situated. Me being a big fish n chips lover, I can't turn down a chippy and this place is somewhat bearable- but until I ordered from somewhere else that I didn't even realize was open, I realized just how poor this place is.

The Scampi is like a breaded paste-like mush with no consistansy or flavour and is absurdly overpriced. I am confident that they use a cheap frozen pre-prepared scampi judging by the way it tastes and can definitely be prepared better at home for a tiny fraction of the price. Avoid ordering Scampi from here at all costs.

The battered sausages are extremely greasy as it feels like they have absorbed so much fat from the fryer, whenever you bite into a battered sausage from here your mouth will fill up with oil. Barely edible.

The cod etc is bland and is again too oily.

The chips in my opinion are OK. The generous amount of cheese served with the cheesy chips is impressive compared to everything else at this place, and are tasty.

They unfortunately do not serve gravy which is ridiculous, as any good Chippy needs Chips n Gravy as an option.

They tend to mess up on the simplest requests, I've ordered a can of drink before and they forget to give it to me, I've ordered pickled eggs before and they have 'forgotten' them, and another time I have ordered pickled eggs and was served gross pickled onions instead??

Steer Clear of SIDWELL FISH & CHIPS I don't usually post things like this but I went in with my 4 year old this evening, I ordered 1 large chips, 2 sausages and curry sauce. When he was wrapping it I looked in the food counter and it didn't look like he'd taken any sausages. I asked 'have you put the normal sausages in' to which he sad yes. He added it up on the calculator and said it came to just under £7, I said he must b wrong and asked how much the sausages were, he said £1.49, I said each? to which he replied in front of my son "didn't you check the f**king price when you looked at the menu?" I looked at the menu again and said no they are 89p, he then said "what are you stupid? Jumbo sausages are £1.49" I explained that I hadn't ordered Jumbo and that I had asked if they were normal size when he was wrapping, he shouted "yes you did, I've worked here 10 years" I told him I didn't do he said fine and charged me for small. Just as I was about to my order from the counter he snatched it from my hand causing me to burn my arm on the front of the counter, opened my order, pulled out the 2 jumbo sausages and put 2 small ones in WITH HIS FINGERS. I was so shocked I told him I wouldn't be returning and left. When my husband opened it, the sausages were tough,chewy and cold where they had been cooked early in the day and left under the lights, the chips were refried, greasy and hard and the curry sauce was cold. So it all ended up in the bin. Not the kind of food you expect when paying £2.30 for a portion of chips and certainly not the service. Never been so...

By far the absolute worst fish chips I have ever had. I practically never leave reviews, but I am shocked. I don't know what they did to the batter, but it had a disgusting taste to it and was greasy. I ordered a medium cod and chips, along with a battered Mars bar to be delivered.

The smell permeated the room it was in and the batter both left a bad aftertaste that didn't want to go away and also affected the taste of the rest of the food.

I had one bite of the battered Mars bar, something I usually enjoy despite it being a little weird for some, and threw it out.

I tried eating the fish without the batter and, trying to ignore the taste left by the batter, the fish was a bit dry, chewy and cheap tasting.

The chips were a bit below average, the kind that if that's all this order were, I would eat but wouldn't choose to order. I'd pick somewhere else. Even despite the £13.40 I spent total, there were hardly any chips. Even the garlic mayo wasn't good.

I was told the sausages are no better either.

And, to make matters worse, I feel ill after eating what I did.
