The garden centre claims to be host to a number of uncommon species and rare varieties but there was nothing Iâd not see before. The garden centre itself was tatty and felt like a volunteer service rather than a business. Plants werenât in particularly great health either. The indoor section of it was full of generic gifts and some tools. Good choice of seeds, but absolutely appalling collection of houseplants. It consisted of some dodgy cacti a few generic foliage plants and some scruffy jasmine.
The gardens you can visit are ticketed, I believe ÂŁ8.50 for an adult? They start off beautiful and incredibly colourful in the Italian garden, but as this is directly connected to the villa I assume this is of higher importance as it is seen by those in the villa for functions.
The rest of the gardens are clearly past their prime, granted this time of year everything is starting to look worse for wear as winter is around the corner, but the entire place felt tatty and unloved. There are plants growing over the pathways, debris and dirt everywhere.
The many water features are oddly placed, as if they have a quota for water features. Mismatched concrete stone pathways connect the gardens together which gives the places a real 1980âs theme park vibe. The small grotto and rock walkway are of a similar aesthetic, ugly and outdated.
The Japanese garden is incredibly stereotypical, evoking what you might find in a theme park with an âOrientalâ theme. Tacky sculptures, worn thatched shelters and a garishly red pagoda style building with no immediate significance other than that it screams east Asia. It feels like whoever maintains and designed the entire place is stuck in the 80âs.
Entry isnât particularly cheap, I expected much better. For a funded garden, with a large function room cafe and shop, the garden seems to be the lowest priority whilst boasting its of âgreat historic importanceâ.
Decent walk about for one or two, donât take the family. Not worth the price.
