Lets start with the good things about Hamden:-
Now with that all the way, lets look at the problems. I have been lucky enough to visit may larger stadiums around Europe and Hampden is the worst by a long long way.
My wife had a foot injury for a recent match, meaning that walking was limited and she wasn't allowed to be weight bearing for long periods of time. She had a doctors letter and hospital discharge letter. Over a week before the game we requested access for drop off at the stadium, not parking, just drop off. Two days later we got an email saying that there was no drop off available at the stadium and that we would have to use Somerville Road. Again no alternative offered after the match. We sent two further emails asking about parking or any provisions for park and ride. No response was made to either of these requests and as such my wife was unable to attend the match and her ticket went unused.
Travel to the stadium is without doubt the worst of any venue that I have attended. They don't want you taking the car, apparently there is an exclusion zone in place during events. However when you click on the link on the Hampden website it take you to a page not available page. Tried to email Hampden to get updated info on this, it wasn't a surprise that they never responded. There doesn't appear to be any recommended event parking available and speaking to friends at the game who had drive, they were left with a 25 minute walk to the match.
I may be wrong on this, but there doesn't appear to be any park and ride so that leaves the train. Getting to the stadium isn't too bad, we went early so train to Queen Street, 5 minute walk to Central and then a 5 minute wait on train to Mount Florida. All fairly quick and straight forward. And then there is getting back. The stations, Mount Florida and Kings Park and the number of available trains are not up to the standard required. 1.5 hour wait to get a train on the way back and there was still a huge queue behind us.
As you get to Hampden there are plenty of turnstyles and the Hampden app works well for access, however that's about the only good thing I can say about the stadium. The view is terrible, so so far away from the pitch whit a shallow gradient in the stands makes for a terrible fan experience. We were about 3/4 of the away way up, however it gets worse the lower you go. The first 10 to 15 rows surely should be restricted view as they are so low and far away from the pitch that there is no perspective on the pitch. Been there and done that part of the stadium before and you would be far better sitting at home and watching on the TV as you spend most of the match watching the game on the big screens.
Catering is terrible, £3.75 for a Coke Zero, which was full of froth and when it settled it was only about 3/4 of a cup. Decided against anything else as the pricing was crazy, over £4 for a pie!
There are no comms at all in the stadium. 4g signal is non existent and there is no in stadium Wi-Fi. Surely in this day and age you have free Wifi.
So there really is nothing positive to say about the match day experience, an outdated stadium, with terrible transports links and poor in stadium facilities for supporters. Surely Scottish supporters deserve something a lot...
Read moreFirst and unfortunately last time we will come to Hamden Park. No water, uncomfortable seats, horrendous roads and early closure of toilets and facilities...
Came here to the foo fighters concert. You were not allowed to bring a water bottle in and this was not communicated online, in emails or on the tickets which listed prohibited items. At stadium gigs in England, you are allowed to bring in empty bottles to fill up inside. They offered free tap water in tiny cups that were only filled up halfway (2 sips worth) or you have to pay £2.50 for tap water in a bigger cup with a lid (advertised as a bottle of water - it was not).
The seats in the stands are really uncomfortable and close together. You were knee to knee with the person next to you, couldn't put a jacket on your chair because of how close the people behind you were and barely enough room to stand/sit with a drink by your feet.
Toilets and facilities closed really early. You wouldn't be able to get water after 10pm even though the concert wasn't over until 11pm. Toilets closed early too, so towards the end and after the concert, your only option is a couple of disgusting portaloos outside. Hundreds of men pee on the wall next to the portaloo so you had volumes of pee running down into the hundreds of people queuing. Minging....but what do you expect if you close the toilets?
The roads around Hamden Park are residential and are not catered to withstand tens of thousands of cars leaving the venue all at once. Traffic was gridlocked with every street and main road backed up with cars and stood still for hours. Ambulances struggled to get through and some cars started maneuvering dangerously to try get out or into streets. Our 2 hour journey became a 4 hour journey....and we had no water for the journey because they binned our water bottles and nowhere is obviously open so late!
We were lucky we were okay, but the circumstances of Hamden Park could quite easily be very unsafe and dangerous. No water for 3 hours surrounded by 50,000 people on a hot day could lead to fainting and illness. Drivers getting impatient from inadequate roads and horrendous traffic could cause an accident. Not risking it and no desire to ever coming back.
Only pros were the alcohol queues and staff were very efficient and most seats seemed to have a clear view, although...
Read moreThis is a review based on a concert experience (Pink on June 22, 2019): we were there early to pick up the tickets. It took a long while for the food stall that had some vegetarian food to get ready, but it was good food for an affordable price. Based on the high amount of security going in during the afternoon we assumed the organisation was topnotch, but that turned out to be pretty disappointing. Instructions on where to go were confusing as well. The staff did not seem very well informed, but they were friendly and as helpful as they could be.
Let us just say that the two stars are based on the great sound and the incredibly large platforms for people with a disability, also a little bit for the friendly, though not very well organised event staff. My girlfriend in a wheelchair could not go the toilet outside the stadium, and inside there was a grand total of two accessible toilets at the platforms...portable toilet houses to be exact, one of which didn't flush (the one at our platform, of course). So we had to go to the other side first. Let me tell you that a portable accessible toilet is no picnic for an electric wheelchair user. Afterwards we even got word of verbal and physical abuse of a wheelchair user at the same toilet from someone who didn't want to go all the way to the back of the stadium to the many, many toilets available to everyone else, and didn't have to patience to wait for said wheelchair user. Where was security if not on the platform right next to where that happened? An absolute scandal! Back on the platform we had a great view of a great concert, but the constant back and forth of security in front of us got frustrating very fast.
Getting public transport back to the city centre was an absolute nightmare after the concert. Traffic was completely jammed, the extra buses couldn't take wheelchair users and the regular buses showed up almost two hours late completely packed, annuling the priority seating for a wheelchair user. After that there was at least an opportunity to get a taxi there with traffic getting back to normal, which still took a long time with many people still stranded there.
We're sorry to say we are not inclined to go to a concert again with this kind of poor showing of an event...
