I am usually a great fan of The Real Wan, but my recent visit left me deeply disappointed. Despite the restaurant's reputation, our experience was marred by an unfair reservation policy and the substandard quality of food.

We were required to make an online reservation, charged £5 per person in advance. However, upon arrival, the restaurant was hardly crowded, making us question the necessity of the reservation in the first place. One of our friends couldn't make it, and we expected a refund for their reservation fee. To our dismay, we were informed that it could only be deducted from our bill, and even then, only £10 of the £15 was accounted for. We were, therefore, unfairly charged an extra £5.

The food, a key aspect of any dining experience, also fell short of expectations. The rice noodles we ordered were served broken into small pieces, negatively affecting our overall experience. The staff seemed unfamiliar with the menu, which did not help either.

Following our visit, we communicated our concerns to the management and received responses filled with justifications instead of solutions. Even after several exchanges, our request for a refund of the unfairly charged amount has yet to be addressed appropriately.

While I understand the challenges restaurants face, it is crucial to ensure that customers are treated fairly and their complaints are addressed in a satisfying manner. Regrettably, that has not been our experience with The Real Wan this time around.

I sincerely hope that they take this feedback into account and work towards improving their customer service and...

I'm never comfortable leaving critical remarks about a restaurant so I'll try and be as objective as possible, rather than simply stick the boot in. There were some limitations to the menu when I went. There was only one soft drink available and a free jug of water. No big deal, but I was surprised fruit juices and other soft drinks were not on the menu. At our table for 4, 3 chairs were wobbly/close to unsafe, one was ok. We decided to just get on with it rather than ask for a different table or new chairs. The menu was close to unreadable due to the size of the print. We were told they were getting new ones. I'd do that sooner rather than later. It can't be that difficult to increase the font size when printing menus. We ordered a lot of dishes, the prices were ok, not overpriced in any way. It's possible we simply ordered dishes that were not to our taste. That can happen. Perhaps we should have ordered something different. All the dumplings appeared extremely oily, and I tried 4 different kinds. If I were to choose again I'd choose the steamed options and ignore the rest. The chicken thigh dish lacked chicken thigh pieces and again I found the broth and noodles to be a little greasy rather than rich in flavour. There are people who I really respect who say that this place is excellent and the food tasty and enjoyable. I would never try and persuade them that they're wrong. All I can say is that I didn't enjoy the food I had. Would I return? Not sure. I'd like to see a different menu...preferably printed in larger font. Edit: I do appreciate the detailed response from...

Previously enjoyed The Real Wan in it’s old location but the food seems to have taken a spectacular nose dive. Spare ribs as in another review here had barely any meat on them at all. Two different dumplings were almost entirely indistinguishable from one another they had so little of the key fillings almost entirely rice. The home cooking schtick felt a lot better when the food was better and prices were lower. Glasgow has some of the best Chinese restaurant in the country why would I come back here again?

Aside from that I had previously been told there was no space when I came to dine alone when the restaurant was only half full, marked that up to my own bad luck and so decided to go back today with my family. The owner seemed put out we hadn’t made a reservation. The restaurant was empty but the three of us were seated at a table for two. Note to the owner, you are a neighbourhood restaurant. Not fine dining. Bookings especially for an empty restaurant put people off coming back. Especially when you then seat smaller parties at a...

The restaurant / takeaway was recommended by a friend. Was here with a relative for dinner on a weekday. It's not a big place and felt a little stuffy inside, just 4 tables for dinning-in and two of were table-for-twos. Would strongly recommend booking if you're planning to have your meal there as it's considered a local favourite. The ceiling is high-ish, but in one of the corners of the kitchen there's black mould visible to patrons. Majority of the dishes are spicy but some can be made mild instead which was just right for us. There's a small range of meatfree choices. Food was nice. The dumplings looked premade (strangely resembles a brand that I use myself at home), but I'd recommend the Mmmmmpo Tofu, it's a bit too savoury, otherwise spot on. Service is hit and miss, if you look Chinese one of the female staff may only speak Mandarin with you. The guy who served us though was nice.

A perfect spot for spicy, soul warming food on a cold autumn night. An excellent meal was had here at the real wan. Take my pricing with a pinch of salt as we had 1 large plate,3 small plates and 2 sets of dumplings (which was probably too much as we couldn't finish it all). The dumplings were some of the best I have had, crispy yet soft with complex flavour and wonderful dipping sauce. Fried potatoes with numbingly tasty Schezuan pepper was a twist on a takeaway away classic. Small sticky ribs reminded me of how good ribs could be. But the star of the show for me was the aubergine dish in the wee plates section. Soft and full of robust flavours but still retaining that meaty quality it can have 10/10. The big plate was good essentially a ream with spicy chicken thigh. Lovely staff and a wonderful atmosphere of a Glasgow cafe, I cannot recommend it enough.

Disappointed. So highly recommended online, and by friends. But it is just not as good as actual Chinese food. This felt like a Scottish Asian fusion mix, where the flavours were lacking depth. The fried rice was oily with no spice (despite there being whole chillies in it), the ribs were not very tender and the broth was bland compared to other authentic Chinese places. I was expecting authentic, hearty and flavourful food. Instead I got under seasoned, over complicated and frankly too expensive food. For these 3 dishes it came to 41.50, which is frankly too dear for any Chinese food not from Edinburgh or London. Overrated and won’t be coming back. Although on a nice note, staff were friendly and able to accommodate us taking away late at night. The restaurant itself is small and quite nicely decorated.
