I was excited to bring my kids to see Hampden, as a proud Scotsman I had been building up excitement for days about introducing this special place to my young family. We booked a tour and sadly it fell a bit flat. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly, but overall the tour was unorganised and short. I was a bit disappointed, and my kids were a bit bored. There wasn't enough done to keep kids attention or to start a fire in their belly to give them the motivation to one day want to don the famous navy blue jersey and run out onto the hallowed turf.
The Scottish football museum doesn't hit how it should. Without the influence of Scotland, we would not have football as it is today and at no point did I feel that came across anywhere nearly as strong as it should. I would also not recommend the museum for young kids, mine are 8 and 6 and big football fans but after 5 minutes they were asking to leave. To be honest, even I found it a hard walk round to keep myself interested and I love Scotland.
I feel the whole tour and museum is missing something and needs modernisation. Simple things like a colouring station for kids or interactive games could keep kids happy whie allowing parents to browse the plethora of footballing memorabilia. During the tour, it could be a good idea to give out kids quizes to keep their interest, many historic places use this as a great way to teach and keep young kids interest.
Overall, in its current form I would not recommend as a family day out for...

My daughter, not particularly a football, aged 10 & my football mad son, aged 6 LOVED this tour.
After being greeted by Paul, our tour guide in the cafe, we made our way through the underground section of the stadium ( the tunnel)
From here, we visited various parts of the ground, including both home & away changing rooms.
The kids' favourite area was the warm-up area , where they both got the chance to score a goal at Hampden.
We then made our way out onto the pitch. The kids on the tour decided the teams for today would be-
Hearts v St Johnstone
We spent some time in and around the dugouts & up in the stand .
The kids both got their photo with a Scottish Cup prop, which they loved !
After the stadium tour, we made our way into the Muesum, which is filled with some outstanding items from over the years.
To anyone thinking of doing this tour , I'd say 100% book it ASAP.
Hampdens a great stadium, filled with a lot of historical nostalgia.
Our Tour Guide Paul is also a credit to the team. He constantly engaged with all the kids & made the day really...
Read moreOne of the best football museums I have ever visited. Unlike the club museums that span around 3 or 4 rooms and have some jerseys and replicas of trophies, it is surprisingly large and exhibits are more diverse. It is not much interactive and will be enjoyed mainly by those who are fond of football history and like to dig deep into history of the game or some of the forgotten clubs (the museum is certainly not only about the old firm) - then you can easily spend here more than 2 hours like I did. The accompanying texts are well informative, in particular clashes with England and early history of Scottish football are well covered. Also need to point out presence of 2 researchers who work directly in the museum, show you around and can answer you anything about Scottish football. I visited on the day when there were no tours around Hampden, yet they were very friendly and individually showed me the stadium! Definitely great experience and worth going 15 minutes by bus...
