Over the years, we have done a good majority of the gardens in Cornwall, they all have their differences, and we have enjoyed the majority. On this trip we wanted to find a new garden to visit, so I did a Google search, and found Lamorran Gardens, thought, that's a bonus, it's at St Mawes, one of our favorite little places. As this is a private garden, and only open 3 days a week, we were lucky enough it was open on the day we wanted. On arrival we found the parking a little awkward, outside the property there is enough parking for about 8 vehicles on the road side, what can you expect from a family home, anyway, that is part of the charm to this garden, it can't get overrun with other visitors, massive plus point. We had a walm welcome to the gardens and given a bit of the history about how it was all built, handed a little map, and off we went, first stop the veranda, for a cream tea for me, and tea and lemon drizzle cake for my wife, excellent service, the cakes were fantastic, all homemade by the owner, and very reasonably priced. Then the gardens, wow, they were stunning, very well cared for, the way the planting had been done, the winding paths, the statues, pond, small water features, the detail and the views, all in all, the best and most enjoyable garden we have ever visited to date. A big thank you to the owners for opening their amazing garden to the general public, and the walm welcome...
Read moreAt £12 per adult (Sep 23) these gardens are reasonable value for money. Given the topology around St Mawes it's no surprise that Lamorran Gardens is built on a hillside and there is considerable rise and fall involved when walking round. A lot of steps, completely unsuited to wheelchairs and the infirm. Nothing at all to interest children. Very nice semi- tropical planting with occasional great views out to sea. Numbered route markers and a simple map are perfectly adequate to guide you around. Just one toilet for anyone to use. Absolutely zero dedicated parking. You just leave your car on the road outside. Pretty cafe serving hot & cold drinks and slices of cake. Normally cream teas too but they had run out of scones when we were there so we lucked out on that....
Read moreAs both a gardener and a garden visitor, these exquisite gardens were a utter joy and surprise. Utterly un-commercialised, full of secrecy, seclusion and exclusivity. The designer deserves FAR more recognition! Planning surprises and secrecy on gradients takes both skill and thought as, without such skill, one can view all from the high points. The quality of the structures and the stonework was exceptional. The attention to detail was apparent everywhere - even to the design of the numbered signs. We adored everything about these gardens. Robert Dudley-Cooke and your very welcoming gardener (whose name I'm ashamed to say, I've forgotten) deserve medals. I wish you the very best and may you always retain the wonderful characters of this truly...
