5 freakin' stars and we didn't even get in.
St. Fillan's Cave is now the stunning setting for a museum at the foot of Cove Wynd, an equally beautiful pedestrianised street (a fairly steep climb on foot).
Worth it though.
The museum is sunk into a natural rock backdrop with only a tiny iron gate at front to offer visitors a clue that something sits inside.
Folklore has it that the something that sits inside is indeed a someone (Saint Fillan), who allegedly had a glowing arm so that he could see in the darkness of cave whilst reading and writing.
It beats ET's glowing nose picking finger story.
I promise to make a return visit.
Hopefully next time we'll locate the museums key custodian.
Other than the stunning external appearance of museum, why did I give this place a 5 star review?
Key custodian!
Trust. There's no better way to run...
Read moreFascinating cave unexpectedly located opposite quaint cottages on Cove Wynd. You can pick up the key for just £1 from The Cocoa Tree shop a couple of minutes walk away, and I'd highly recommend a coffee and cake while you're there. The cave itself extends further back than I'd imagined, carved out by the sea and a river which once flowed through the cave to the Firth of Forth. The cave's geology is a mixture of limestone and sandstone. It's the largest and most impressive cave of several I visited around the East Neuk. The cave is believed to have been inhabited by hermits and visited by pilgrims from Ireland and the European continent. There's a detailed information sheet inside the cave explaining the story of St Fillan. Today the cave serves as a shrine to St Fillan and occasionally hosts...
Read moreFound the chocolate shop key owners and paid £2 each entry It was a very hot August Summers day when we headed down to the cave... which when we entered enjoyed the coolness from inside. Fascinating look around and found out about St. Fillan, a 7th-century Irish monk, known for the legend of his glowing left arm, which illuminated his cave, allowing him to write and read without needing a candle. On locking up we then had the climb back up many steps to...
