A Review of Ullapool Town Nestled on the shores of Loch Broom in the Scottish Highlands, Ullapool is a picturesque fishing village that feels like a love letter to Scotland’s rugged charm. With its whitewashed cottages, bustling harbor, and dramatic backdrop of An Teallach and Beinn Ghobhlach, this vibrant town of about 1,500 residents is a gateway to the Northwest Highlands’ wild beauty. I spent a weekend wandering Ullapool’s compact streets, enchanted by its blend of authenticity and accessibility. The harbor is the heart of the town, alive with fishing boats and ferries to the Outer Hebrides. The Ullapool Museum, housed in a historic church, offered fascinating insights into the area’s crofting and fishing heritage (rated 4.5/5 on Tripadvisor). Dining at The Ceilidh Place was a highlight—fresh seafood chowder paired with live folk music created an unforgettable evening . Outdoor enthusiasts will love the Ullapool Hill walk, a 2.5-mile trail with panoramic loch views. Shops like The Captain’s Table and local markets brim with artisanal crafts and smoked fish, though some note prices reflect the tourist draw. Summer festivals, like Loopallu (pre-2019), add vibrancy, though parking can be tight during peak season. Ullapool’s warm community, stunning scenery, and cultural richness make it a must-visit...

We stopped for few hours to catch ferry to Stornoway. Big Tesco Ummmm... Camper city... No real facilities for them.

Forget Facebook... And what people think, believe, WHATEVER... You can pay £10 to stay a maximum of 24 hours in a Van behind Tesco. There is a lay-by about 1 mile south of ullapool. Free, no probs for overnight stay only We were parking a T5 for 5 days while going to Stornoway. No parking facilities. Ferry company just told us Tesco's car park... aaarrggghhhhhh... No you can't!!! We asked at campsite... No deal. In the end we parked 4 streets back from ferry terminal on street. Not in anyone's view. No problems. So we did it mid September 2022... FACT!

We were going to stay a couple of days in ullapool after Stornoway but...

Ullapool is a charming Scottish port town that serves as the main gateway to the Outer Hebrides. The ferry terminal is modern and well-equipped, offering clean facilities, friendly staff, and beautiful views over Loch Broom. Operated by Caledonian MacBrayne, the ferry service to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis is efficient and scenic, with the MV Loch Seaforth ferry providing comfortable seating and onboard amenities. The crossing takes approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes. Overall, Ullapool offers a pleasant and hassle-free ferry experience, making it an excellent starting point for exploring the stunning landscapes of the Outer Hebrides.
