I love this place so much I asked my then girlfriend to marry me here. She's now my wife, so five stars all round! One of the most beautiful places you can visit in England. For minimum exertion (out of Keswick you walk along a short path) you reach this beautiful vantage point that frames the lake and the hills perfectly. There's a well placed bench to take it all in, or in my case to use as a base of operations for my proposal. I can't imagine anyone ever looking out over Friars Crag and remarking "I guess it's alright... sweetshop now?". So if it's to propose like I did, watch the hired boats manned by first time sailers drift.. I mean sail along the lake, take in the well fed ducks and other wildlife as they go about their well fed existence, as a deserving pitstop on a longer walk around the lake or to find the perfect spot to ponder life, love and all of the wonders of life (such as what it would be like if cats had opposable thumbs?) Then this is the magic wee spot for you! You'll come away and find that you want to tell people about it and encourage others to go, generally I find that's the sign of something worth while and why I'm bothering to tell you my review. So I hope if you're in the area that you'll make that short wee walk, past the ducks and the benches with the lovely wee old couples enjoying their sandwiches and through the trees with the squirrels darting around various openings with nice views of the lake until you reach Friars Crag and remark "aye, it's alright! That review was pretty much bang on.. apart from he didn't mention that it can get a wee bit muddy when it's tipping it down". So if you're in Keswick, go have a wee look...
Read moreNestled on the shores of Derwentwater, Friars Crag is a truly breathtaking spot that encapsulates the serene beauty of the Lake District. As you approach the Crag, a gentle path through the woods opens up to one of the most spectacular views in the area. The vista stretches out over the tranquil waters of Derwentwater, framed by the distant peaks of the surrounding fells. It’s no wonder this place was described by John Ruskin as one of the three most beautiful views in Europe.
What makes Friars Crag special isn’t just the panoramic views; it’s the peaceful ambiance that pervades the area. Whether you're here for a leisurely stroll or a moment of quiet reflection, the atmosphere is perfect for both. The bench at the end of the Crag provides an ideal spot to sit and soak in the scenery, with the sound of the water gently lapping at the shore below.
Accessible to all ages and fitness levels, the walk to Friars Crag is short and easy, making it a perfect stop for families, couples, and solo travelers alike. Even on a misty day, the ethereal quality of the landscape adds to the charm, making each visit feel unique.
For those who appreciate a bit of history, there’s also a memorial to John Ruskin, whose writings and advocacy helped preserve the natural beauty of the Lake District. This adds a layer of cultural significance to the already stunning surroundings.
In summary, Friars Crag is a must-visit if you’re in Keswick or the Lake District. It offers a blend of natural beauty, tranquility, and historical interest that is rare to find. Whether you're an avid photographer, a nature lover, or just someone looking to unwind, Friars Crag will...
Read moreI love coming here to see the lake and the boats out on it here in keswick, it was a sunny day that made it much better and the gorgeous views you get is just amazing, unless like me and stuck in a wheelchair there's only views from the paths which are still great views but those that can walk will be able to see much more from lots of angles. There is of course the bench and vantage point a little further down but the ground was a little too steep and loose gravel for my electric wheelchair to manage so I stayed up on the flatter paths nearest to the sign (friars Crag) there's plenty to walk around if you fancy that as many hikers and walkers of all ages flock here to see the views that are simply breathtaking. There's plenty of benches to sit on and take a rest, some have picnic style tables for larger groups or families to use. And if you fancy a nice cold ice-cream you can purchase one or more from the cabin shop before the subway, there is also a café adjacent if you fancy a hot drink and snack and around the corner of the café is a disabled toilet and normal toilets. Definitely a place to visit at least once if you don't live local but definitely a return to place for those who...
