My visit to the Lincoln Museum was far more enjoyable than I anticipated. What I thought would be a brief exploration of Lincoln's history turned out to be a fantastical dive into the development of civilization. For a free venue, I was blown away by the quality of the museum.
The museum excels at using a variety of engaging mediums, with many interactive displays, games to play, and recreations available to access for free among the vast amount of informative exhibits. The collection of historic items is impressive, featuring relics from the Romans, Vikings, and more. The museum itself is very modern, the building is beautiful, and the air conditioning was a godsend on a hot summer day.
The staff were very helpful and welcoming. We even had a few interesting conversations with other visitors who were passionate about discussing history.
If I have to find something to critique, it would be our experience returning in the evening for the launch of the games expo. The website stated a 6 pm start, but when we visited earlier in the day, the posters, flyers, and desk staff all said 5 pm. When we arrived at 5 pm, everything was locked, and we weren't allowed in until 6 pm. This was an inconvenience, as it used up our holiday time and required us to pay for parking. The expo itself was fine but did not exceed our expectations.
Despite this minor inconvenience, my overall experience at the Lincoln Museum was outstanding, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in history and...
Read moreOne of my favourite buildings, which is a contemporary but in my view sympathetic and appropriate addition to Lincoln's high quality and historic architecture in the area. I think this a great place to visit, or even hang out. The coffee shop /restaurant is a really nice place to do this (although I noticed it was closed due to Covid-19 when we visited in May '21). The Collection is well run by nice people. The exhibition spaces are very high quality and this is carried through to the exhibitions themselves that I've seen. The shows change periodically so check ahead to make sure areas aren't closed due to installs (I'd still go for the building). There are interesting timetabled activities that take place there too. There is a strong colleagial community amongst the arts and culture organisations and individuals in the city, but I understand that The Collection is formerly linked with the Usher Gallery next door, and it is worth taking that in at the same time, not least because surely nobody wants to walk up that hill twice, right?! The Architect was Hugh Strange for anybody interest in...
Read moreI visited the Lincoln Museum on Danes Terrace hoping to explore the exhibits, but was disappointed to find it closed until next year- especially frustrating as this hadn’t been updated on Google at the time (though I’m glad to see that’s now been corrected).
Thankfully, the on-site café turned the day around. The seating area was spotless and really well-kept, with comfy chairs, a modern feel, and big windows that let in loads of natural light. The atmosphere was calm and inviting, with gentle music playing in the background – perfect for relaxing after the initial letdown.
The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the food was actually a lovely surprise – I had a hot panini that was fresh, cheesy, and delicious. Sometimes a good sandwich and a peaceful place to sit are all you need to salvage the day.
While I hope to come back and experience the museum itself next time, I’d still recommend stopping in for a bite at the café. It’s a quiet little spot that really...
