On a previous visit to this part of Wales I really wanted to do the steam train, unfortunately it wasn't to be so this time I made sure I booked well in advance. I'm not going to lie the cost of a return journey for 2 adults and 2 children was a little expensive once you take part on the excursion and realise you basically sit on the train for almost 2 hours.

Unless your children are massive train enthusiast, or like scenery I wouldn't necessarily recommend for children.

We left Llangollen and head for Corwen which we was told would take 40 minutes. Now don't get me wrong the scenery was fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed myself however the rest of our group wasn't as impressed. We stopped at every station along the way, maybe 4 or 5. They were old fashioned stations almost like a step back in time obviously I wouldn't say these were even used nowadays but we're still in pristine condition just as they would of been I guess they were like little museums or shrines. When we finally arrived at Corwen the conductor said we had 40 minutes before the train was to depart back to Llangollen. We were heading into the last part of the day, however there is absolutely nothing to do in Corwen! Nothing was open apart from a cafe or pub. At the actual station there was a small hit where you can get information, have a cuppa or a slice of cake. Look at a railway model, buy a book or sit outside and just take in the beautiful scenery. 40 minutes later and we're heading back to the finishing line the exact same journey we had made 40 minutes prior.

It's for this reason I found the cost a little too high. It was an experience to travel on an old steam train and take in the stunning scenery along the way, we even followed the river for a good part of the way. But that's where my journey stops perhaps as already mentioned amazing if your a train enthusiast but for the rest of my group it was an experience but wasted on them!

I thoroughly enjoyed the experience but wouldn't...

We arrived early and was taken aback with the cost. We sat on the platform for some time before being told that there was a delay due to a mechanical problem. The train arrived 30 minutes late and to everyone's disappointment, it was a diesel train and not a steam train as we all expected. The train ride was ok but in parts very overgrown, which blocked the scenery. We arrived at Corwen at 2:10 and told that the train was leaving at 2:25 to keep it on time for the following tour, it was a pity about our tour being cut short through no fault of the customers. This gave us no time to visit Corwen and the majority of people stayed on the train. We asked about the steam train and was told quite abruptly, the they can't afford to run it on weekdays and it only runs on weekends. If we had know this fact, we wouldn't have bothered to go on the journey, as the steam train was the whole point of the trip. We were all on the train at 2:25 as requested and to add insult to injury, we arrived back in Llangollen early for the next trip. I appreciate that problems occur, but couldn't they have shared the delay with the later trip to allow our tour to have had a reasonable length of time in Corwen? All in all, a very disappointing and expensive tour. We always try and support Heritage trips and tours but in future we will think carefully about it and make sure of the...

We recently had the most wonderful experience celebrating our friends' wedding on the Llangollen Railway! It was a truly unique way to share their special day, and the Llangollen Railway made everything run smoothly and beautifully.

While there wasn't a steam train operating on the day, the diesel train had its own charm. It brought back a nostalgic feeling of childhood train rides, and the rhythmic rumble added to the ambience of the day. The best part? The scenery! The Dee Valley unfolded before us as we chugged along, offering breathtaking views of mountains, rivers, and valleys.

The wedding ceremony itself was intimate and heartfelt, held at Llangollen Station. The staff were fantastic, making sure everything was just right for the happy couple. After the vows, we all boarded the train for a celebratory ride. The carriages were clean and comfortable, and the atmosphere was electric with joy. It was a fantastic way to continue the festivities and take in the stunning Welsh countryside.

This wasn't just a train ride; it was a unique and unforgettable experience. The Llangollen Railway provided the perfect setting for our friends' special day, and we can't recommend them highly enough. If you're looking for a romantic and memorable way to celebrate a wedding or simply enjoy a scenic train ride through Wales, look no further than the...

A jewel in the railway preservation crown. Located in the centre of the historic town of Llangollen, the railway follows the river Dee for 10 miles through what can only be described as stunningly picturesque countryside and villages until it reaches the town of Corwen. The railway itself is looked after and maintained by a dedicated group of volunteers. Each of the stations, carriages and trains painstakingly restored to bring back to life the history of a bygone era. Parking is within the town with all day parking costing approximately £4.00. During busy periods, car parking is limited, however a larger car park is located a little further out of the town near to the Pavilion, which is a 5/10 minute walk. We chose to purchase a day rover ticket at £29.00 each, allowing us to travel all day and get on and off at the different stops, to either walk across the chain bridge, have lunch in Corwen or grab a drink in Carrog. If you choose a standard return, allow for a good couple of hours. There are events run throughout the season with a variety of different engines, a mixage of steam and diesel locomotives. Recommend checking online before visiting, as steam trains doesn’t run every weekend.
