I really don't know where to start. There was nobody behind the bar when I walked in, but the barman did quickly appear from his seat with the customers, I thought he must have been just waiting until a customer appear, but there was already a queue, so obviously not. Anyway, ordered our food and tried to order tea and coffee, but machine was broke, so unavailable. Sat and waited in the fairly pleasant covered area outside. Our food had not arrived 40 minutes later so I went inside to find out how much longer it was likely to be. Again there was no one behind the bar, when the barman pulled himself away from his seat in the bar, he didn't seem completely with it. Took out ticket from the board (we were the only ones eating) and looked inside the dumb waiter next to the bar; where our food was sitting, and judging by the coldness of the scampi and chips and the crust on the cold chilli, I am guessing had been there for some time, despite his claim that it had only just arrived. Beleive it or not, we were starving so we ate it. In fairness, if it hadn't been cold, it wouldn't have been too bad. Needless to say, nobody came out to ask if everything was alright; so will just put this one down to a bad experience and steer well clear of the...
Read moreOrdered food and drinks. There were only 2 staff members and they were run off their feet. They were very pleasant. When I ordered food - 2 steak and ale pies. I was asked if I wanted a larger dish for an extra £1 of which there is no mention on the menu. I agreed, but when it came out, it was tiny. I can't imagine how small the normal size dish is. It wasn't even a proper size dinner plate. And the deserts - rocky road sundae was very tiny and was missing marshmallows and flake. The food was nice but definitely not very good-sized portions and things were missing. It's part of the Marstons chain, and if that's what they're serving nowadays, then I'll be avoiding them from now on. I felt for the staff. One of the 2 girls working was telling another customer they only get a 30-minute break on a 12 hour shift. That's not right at all. Shame on you, Marstons. Definitely very poor...
Read moreIf you're not a local I wouldn't bother. Because of the pandemic they were only doing table service but that meant sitting at a table and not having any idea if they'd seen you walk in. No way of knowing who's staff and who's customer as people who seemed to be sat having a drink one minute were 'working' the next. After waiting fifteen minutes and had nobody take our order (and no staff even come nearby) went to the bar to make sure they'd seen us as we were sat out the back. Got told it was table service only and explained I just wasn't sure if anyone had seen us walk in. They said 'oh right, okay'. Went to sit back down, waited another ten minutes, still nobody came so we walked out. No way of knowing if the person I spoke to actually worked there. Atmosphere is very 'local' but wouldn't have minded that if we could have just got a pint but alas even that seemed too...
