GREEN SPACE So much more could be done to this park. It’s bland. So much space could afford to have dedicated wildflower beds. Apart from the trees, there is huge scope to encourage wildlife. Park management resembles a sports field. Additionally, diversity of flora would be more attractive to visitors. The Friends group is lackadaisical. There is very little diversity of wild flora in the park and the only colour to be seen, is in the small rose garden, (offset to one far side of the park). Why not sow a wildflower mix, with ornamental grass seed, for example, around the park verges? Mixing in Yellow Rattle, (a semi parasitic plant), would combat against the growth of Perennial Rye Grass, and ensure more flowers grow up and less ‘standard’ grass, (which smothers everything). This would ensure more light reaching flowers.
So much space in this park has been ignored for wildlife. It’s as if the importance of wildlife here is very low. There is huge room for improvement. Making this one small change to the perimeter verges, would encourage more diversity of species. I would be interested to know Markfield Park’s Management Plan.
THE CAFE It’s quite expensive for the area and customer service is strained and...
