I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Phoenix Cinema in East Finchley, and I must say it was a delightful experience. As one of the last remaining "old school" theaters in the area, it exudes a certain charm that is hard to find elsewhere.
Upon entering the cinema, I was immediately struck by the cozy and inviting atmosphere. The seating was incredibly comfortable, making it tempting to sink into the plush chairs and forget about the outside world. It was the perfect setting to fully immerse myself in the movie-watching experience.
One of the highlights of the Phoenix Cinema is its diverse selection of films. Whether you're a fan of mainstream blockbusters or independent gems, you're sure to find something to satisfy your taste. I had the pleasure of watching (yes again) "Oppenheimer" during my visit, and it was a fantastic choice.
Another aspect that impressed me was the food and drink options available at the cinema. While some people are popcorn purist it's always a treat to have a variety of options to enhance the movie-watching experience.
The Phoenix Cinema also boasts a charming lobby area where you can relax before or after the movie. Highly recommended sipping a cup of coffee and taking in the ambiance of the place. Additionally, the small balcony overlooking the high road added a unique touch to the cinema's overall appeal. It was a lovely spot to people-watch and soak in the atmosphere of East Finchley.
I will be returning to the Phoenix Cinema in the future. Its combination of comfortable seating, great film selection, and inviting atmosphere make it a standout choice for movie...

I visited the Phoneix Cinema for the first time October 2019 for an evening preview screening. It's a charming cinema with really well thought out layout and facilities and friendly, helpful and courteous staff .
I noticed that they have a permanent ramp which is ideal for accessibility into the venue. The foyer is bright and welcoming, with lots of snack and drinks I even found Judes ice creams with the mango sorbet (£3.00) working well for me.
There are lost of additional seating areas benches and chairs, so if like me, you're early, you'd have plenty of places to relax in. Upstairs the cafe is larger than it seems - I had a long seated alcove area all to myself around the corner. The food and drinks are really extensive even more so than downstairs, so a Belvoir Lemonade £3.00) was in order for me, though I would return when it's less busy during the day to enjoy the offerings. The auditorium is very plush and well cared for with great sound and comfy seats
The ladies toilets on the ground floor were small but clean with plenty of mirrors, nice hand wash and cream though the hand dryer was rather lame as myself and other patrons laughed at.
From East Finchley station (Northern Line) take the exit on the left by the ticket machines and walk ahead, there may be a mobile coffee van open, walk pass this to the corner and look left and you'll see the red neon sign for the Phoenix on the opposite side of the street, which is less than and 3...
Read moreThe Phoenix is just across the road from East Finchley underground, a retro single screen movie theatre that plays movies and other screen events (operas, tours) that you sometimes can't find anywhere else. Titles are constantly rotated, I recommend just see what's showing, make a decision to go whenever something takes your fancy.
Pros - great building, mild art deco styling, lovely, welcoming staff, good sound (albeit a little low in volume), good screen but not huge, reasonable prices for tickets, food and drink. Audiences are well behaved, arrive on time and respect the performance.
Cons - front rows stalls, tiered in the back half but not steeply; if it's full, the person in front may block your view slightly - each seat is directly behind the one in front - it's often not full mind you, today I watched Drive My Car and there was plenty of room, it was relaxing. The seats have no cup holder, something we take for granted these days.
Neither pro nor con - the seats are firm, but I wasn't uncomfortable watching a 3 hour film. Depends on...
