Quite simply one of the most stunning artificial water gardens in England. The whole place is essentially a large rural idyll built by the great engineer William Armstrong, featuring a heavily modified natural water course with waterfalls and rocky banks in a faux rural setting. The naturalism is deceptive (many visitors assume the place is completely natural), and the scale rivals that of Studley Royal in Yorkshire, an altogether more tame water garden.
Services are rudimentary, with one public toilet and a small visitor centre. There is a well stocked petting zoo which will be the highlight of many a child's visit.
The lower end of the valley beneath the petting zoo is a well kept grassy area where children can run around quite safely and families can picnic.
For a public garden like this, accessibility is not high. Even if you can get into the park by road down the steep banks you'll find only part of the interior well paved, and barely traversible by wheelchair even with a sturdy pusher or a powerful scooter. Overall, this park is a severe challenge to those with low mobility. With rare exceptions steep gradients can be expected everywhere in the park. A realistic attitude and good planning may make for a fruitful visit, however. There's no scenery like this elsewhere in the lower reaches...

Read moreSuch an amazing place to visit! Of course you can get there by public transport or car but when I visited recently I just walked from the centre of town using Google maps. The area is massive with lots to see and do for families and individuals. There were lots of runners using the paths, groups of walkers and young mums with prams. There are toilets and refreshments available and Jesmond Dene joins onto other leisure areas. If you are visiting be sure to visit the animal corner! Whilst all the paths are pretty good surfaces the terrain varies tremendously and an be quite steep in places. There are lots of signposts to help but unfortunately none of these give any idea of distance between the various points of interest. I have visited at different times of the year and would love to go back around May time as I think there should be a good show of rhododendrons. Definitely a destination to add to your list if you are...
