What can I say about Derry that hasn't already been said here. The most wonderful, amazing and enchanting place I think I've ever been to. If you don't know the history of Derry you need to dispense with Google and news papers and come here and be enlightened about how wonderful these people are. I've never felt a stronger sense of community and ownership of a home. Clean streets, fair prices and most of all friendly people who just want you to know about their history. "A nation that keeps one eye on the past is wise. A nation that keeps two eyes on the past is blind." Being from England I'd been steered in my understanding, I consider myself to have been educated by my visit. If you've never been to Derry, you're missing out in a very big way. Thank you Derry, you have a new and grateful friend.

The wall, surrounding area and the Free Derry museum are a must visit for those interested in history, social history, social struggles and how a community and culture rises from the ashes. Book a walking tour and visit the places and stories of a marginalized community, who were subdued, beaten, discriminated against and murdered by forces of the Crown. You will then see how, through determination of spirit and forceful resistance, their stories give hope to other communities and races who are being opressed at this time. There are plaques, monuments, remembrance gardens, artistic murals (proper hand painted murals, not printed plastic ones like in Unionist areas of Belfast) and stories from local people. Take the time to understand the suffering this community was endured. TAL

Out of all the murals about The Troubles in Derry I found this set the most interesting. On the left it show a British solider knocking down door probably trying to get into a Catholic's house and on the right you see the residents from the Bogside running away probably from the CS gas of the Police. There is a staircase in the middle where visitor can just walk up (entrance near the museum to the right) and take a photo of themselves from the street level, shot as if you are caught in between the conflict. This place is a must visit for anyone who is interested in IRA history or the Irish struggle for freedom.

I have never experienced something like this section of Derry before in a developed country. Even on a random day with nothing going on, it felt like their was tension in the air. The anti-British signs, recruitment posters for the IRA, swastikas drawn over pro-Irish propaganda, vandalism of all sorts of political signs, it was something elsw. To see after effects of what was/is essentially a first world 20th-21st century race war happening in the UK/Ireland is just unreal.

It was very informative, and I am exceedingly grateful to have visited, to try to get some more perspective on how a situation like Derry could happen. I hope I remember Derry, and use it as a reminder to do my best, on a personal level, to never allow myself or those around me to cause situation such as this to...
