I was going to give 3* but I decided that would be unfair as it's not an expensive entry fee. My reasoning is that when Babs (the record breaking old car) isn't on show, which apparently is quite often, there's not a lot to look at unless you're a major petrol head.
And the big empty car-shaped space makes it look like the place revolves around Babs - I'd have been happy if they'd filled the gap with any sporty looking car or motorbike just so it doesn't stand out so! Plus, pretty much everything is behind glass, so it's almost entirely a visual experience.
Risking seeming very uncouth and ungrateful I should also wonder why a museum so closely associated with Pendine Sands, which is around 10m away from the building, doesn't have much of a view of the beach. Some low level windows in the seaward wall would have added so much to the experience and put the exhibits in a proper context (and remember this is Wales so the weather outside isn't always nice for standing around).
However, to avoid being too cranky I should mention it's clean, bright, modern and with friendly staff. Plus, the gift shop is nice, although it didn't have much in the way of 'pocket money' or 'tacky tourist' souvenirs (in fact, most of the shop items aren't much associated with speed or Pendine, but seem very good quality).
So overall I have to say go visit as it's got to be high up the bucket list of any petrol head or speed freak. I just wish they had a bit more to look at, or even touch - just display some of Babs old spark plugs and oil filters and I'll be...
Read moreThe museum itself was an excellent choice for a group of 10 of us for my Grandsons birthday outing. We really enjoyed it, particularly the inter active experiences. The staff member on the desk however made it a 2 rating rather than a 5. He was not at all helpful with our choice of payment as a diverse group but we accepted his terse manner and paid up. Unfortunately on leaving he made a very embarrassing incident in front of many people by shouting "what is that doing here" pointing at the families small well behaved dog. We explained that there is no visibal signage to say that dogs are not allowed- as we had checked the previous day. And that we clearly walked in with the dog when he was sitting taking our money. Other staff members had walked through the museum and said nothing. His rude unpleasant manner and indiscretion spoilt the visit for us all and as an ex employer of staff i would definately advise some customer service training for this gentleman before he offends...
Read moreI've always wanted to visit Pendine as I've been a keen supporter of all things land speed for decades. Visited on Saturday 19th and were told that the video presentation wasn't working and that we could have a discount off the entry. Fair enough but when you consider how few artifacts there are on display the lack of a video made it a 20 minute visit. Even the shop was a disappointment with just two books for sale and two prints available in several sizes. Fast forward to Monday when we visited Laugharne at the other end of the sands and were just buying a few gifts to take home when the shop keeper said that Bluebird had made a very rare appearance at Pendine that very day. To say I was cross was an understatement - why the hell did someone at the museum not say something or have a poster regarding the event? My other half noticed that there was a car park being closed for an "event" of some sort - the museum staff didn't know what the event was.. Completely...
