The maritime museum at Porthmadog is a gem of a museum to visit and you will get a warm welcome from the volunteer team. We expected the Slate Industry would feature in the exhibits and we were pleasantly surprised to learn that shipbuilding was also a major business for the town. A 10-minute video explained how the port developed into a major export hub to take the, best-in-the-world, slate to Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australia and the ships exporting the slate were all built right outside. The artefacts on display bring to life what is now a sleepy yacht harbour and you will leave feeling a lot of respect for the vision of these entrepreneurs of the 19th Century and the skill of the...

A Timeworn Treasure by the Harbour

Tucked beside the charming harbour of Porthmadog lies a doorway to the past—the Maritime Museum, a compact but captivating trove of seafaring history.

Step inside, and you’re instantly transported to an age of wind and timber, where ships were born from salt-kissed wood and brave souls charted courses into the unknown. Through artifacts, maps, and tales etched into time, you'll discover when and how Porthmadog’s proud vessels were crafted and launched into legend.

This hidden gem is a must for curious minds and history-lovers alike. If you’ve ever wondered what stories whisper through the waves of a seaside town, this is the perfect...

My arrival was roughly 45 minutes before it closes at 16:00. The lady volunteer very quickly set up an informative and interesting video covering the history of Porthmadog. After which I was able to have a quick look around the artefacts and exhibits. I have a strong interest in maritime history and enjoyed looking around this small museum and would recommend anyone with an interest to give it 2-3 hrs...

It's a quaint museum that tells the story of the ships used to move slate from Porthmadog. Accessibility - easy enough to walk round. For wheelchair users, there's a small step at the entrance, but on request they do have another entrance if required. The museum is very snug and some users may find it a challenge to get around.

Very enjoyable visit and pleasantly surprised at how interesting and how much there was to see. The lady volunteer (sorry I didn't get her name) was very helpful and informative. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. At only £2 entrance fee what's not to like. Well worth a visit😊
