We were really only at the Citadel to try out the swimming pool. As a disabled person, swimming is the only way I can excercise now. First off, the entry charge seemed quite expensive in comparison to other Ayrshire swimming venues (more than double!). Not all the lockers were in working order. Most of the keys had burst wristraps. Plus it wasnt very clear that it wasn't a £1 coin, but indeed a 50p coin, that was needed for the lockers. I can usually enter a pool via steps, but the Citadel only had wall ladders, so I then had to request that one of the pool guards help me, by operating the special 'mobility' chair to put me into the water. For a disabled person, this can actually be quite embarrassing. Thankfully it wasn't too busy on this occasion. The water itself was extremely 'cool', and quite unpleasant as time went on. We couldn't wait to get out & under the hot showers. Although this experience wasn't brilliant, it in no way reflects the helpfulness & friendliness of the staff. Before we had even travelled 12 miles to the Citadel, we phoned the website tele no to ask about disabled access. It was obv not a direct line, but a 'central' info line. The person on the end of that line couldn't give me the accessibility info that I needed. They didn't know the Citadel building personally so really couldn't help me. Safe to say, it doesn't look like we'll be back on a regular basis for our...
Read moreReview of swimming & changing facilities. Citadel is a monument of mismanagement. The changing facilities are old, battered and filthy. They're long overdue a deep clean, and unfortunately they don't appear to get regular or daily cleaning.
The pool area should be great, but it's really showing it's ages and lack of care and investment. Investment, interestingly SAC have decided to spend millions on improving the external appearance of the entrance to Citadel, visitors to Ayr being hoodwinked apparently being more important than the experience of local people, the customer.
There's cracked and smashed tiles throughout, leaky roof, smashed windows covered with bin bags, urinals overflowing onto the floor, smelly toilets etc. But yes, the entrance will look nice.
There's leisure centres abandoned elsewhere in the UK that even after 4-5 years worth of graffiti and vandalism they're still cleaner and better looked after...
Read moreVisited the sauna this week after having not been in for some time I used to visit on a dailly basis,I thought I would go and relax,i found it to be the opposite experience the place is disgusting now. Everything dirty and rusty and falling to bits to the point where i was even getting hit with bits of the jaccuzi filter floating in it. I actually felt like i might catch something using the place. And It clearly says no shaving in the spa area but i'm sure a blind eye is turned to the "regular" but I dont really want to be sitting having a sauna and there's a guy sitting shaving. Its only saving grace was it was only £4 to get in. Dirty, filthy and not fit for purpose oh and 1 more thing using pee filters meant for urinals in the steam room and...
