We came here on a saturday on the way east. You can see the cathedral from far away and you could get some pics and a look without entering the site even. But make sure that you actually DO visit the whole site, since there's lots to see and learn. Since we're members entrance was free and our Bulldog was welcome as well on site. Building began in the first half of the 1200s. The cathedral was once richly carved and adorned with stained glass and painted decoration. A lot has gone, but a lot is still here and you still can image what a sight it must have been when it was whole. After the Protestant Reformation it was only used sometimes for Catholics and started its demise. The grounds, the cathedral, the graveyard. All equally impressive. Some sections you can visit from the inside as well and climb up. There's so much to read, see and learn. That's why it is very rewarding to actually enter the site and not just take a pic and leave. A wonderful, beautiful piece of history.

After trying to get a slot to visit all summer we went on at 2pm on a Saturday on a very cold, windy October on the off-chance we'd get in. No queue and a really helpful guy on the front desk. Loads to see with QR codes to scan at most points. So many different stone examples to look at with a computer to view other stone examples if you don't fancy climbing the tower. We climbed the tower with our preschooler. It's a narrow spiral staircase and some of the steps are smaller than others so do be careful. The view from the top is amazing and well worth the climb. There are a few rooms with displays on the way so you can stop and rest. Toilets available in the entrance with some trinkets to buy. I'd definitely go again. (The toilets were lovely and warm and very clean) We spent about an hour and a half here and there was still more to look at.

Elgin Cathedral is a historic ruin in Elgin, Moray, northeastern Scotland. The Cathedral dedicated to the Holy Trinity was built in 1224 on land provided by King Alexander II, outside of Elgin Bay and near the Lois River. After a fire that arose in 1270, the Reconstruction Program significantly expanded the building. It was not affected by the Scottish Independence Wars, but again suffered huge fire damage in 1390. In 1402, the Cathedral was again burned down in an attac by the Lord of the Island / local Celtic leaders. The number of clerics required tu staff the cathedral continued to grow, as well as the number of craftsmen needed to maintain the buildings. In 1560, the cathedral was abandoned and its work was transferred to the parish church of St. Giles. After removing the lead from the roof, in 1567, the cathedral began to fall apart.

It is a shame that we can only give Elgin Cathedral 5 stars. This was the first sightseeing stop on our holiday, and it set the bar very high. The staff are friendly and knowledgable, and provided us with the children's gravestones quiz, which we found really enhanced our experience, despite the fact we're both in our 30s. I'd recommend that any visitors consider requesting the quiz whether they have little ones with them or not. The exhibitions are very interesting, especially the light show which demonstrates how one of the tombs would have looked originally. The steps in the tower are quite hard work and a little bit nervewracking, but there is the option for anyone who is not sure about climbing them to do a virtual tour. The graveyard is full of fascinating memento mori iconography, and also includes what might be Scotland's tallest gravestone, which is quite an...
