Kirkcudbright Galleries is a true gem, offering a delightful cultural experience in the heart of Kirkcudbright. Housed in a beautifully restored building, the galleries provide a perfect blend of local history and art, making it a must-visit for both art enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. The permanent collection highlights the town’s rich artistic heritage, particularly focusing on the renowned Kirkcudbright Artists’ Colony. The well-curated exhibits showcase works from notable Scottish artists, offering insight into the creative spirit that has long flourished in this coastal town. The galleries also feature rotating exhibitions, ensuring there’s always something new to see, from contemporary art to historical pieces. The layout of the galleries is spacious and inviting, with plenty of natural light that enhances the viewing experience. Informative plaques accompany the artwork, providing context without overwhelming visitors with information. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to answer questions or offer additional insights into the exhibits. In addition to the art, the galleries house a lovely café where you can enjoy a cup of coffee or a light meal while reflecting on the exhibitions. There’s also a well-stocked gift shop offering unique souvenirs, including prints and books related to the collections. Kirkcudbright Galleries does an excellent job of celebrating the town’s artistic legacy while also embracing modernity. Whether you’re an art lover or just looking for a pleasant way to spend an afternoon, this gallery is well worth a visit.

I have visited these galleries on several occasions, there are currently two displays open which show a variety of local work from the last couple of centuries. Importantly for me there is a wonderful cafe in the galleries where i like to get coffee and or lunch. The only issue with the cafe is that it is popular and can be difficult to get in especially with the covid restrictions in place.

Free entry. 3 level art gallery, top floor is for temporary exhibitions, 2nd floor has a great display on Jessie M King, while the ground floor details the art history of the town and has a couple of Peploes. Also has a James Guthrie on display in summer 2025 that is well worth catching. Small cafe and shop.

First time visiting Kirkcudbright galleries, and it was an enjoyable experience.

I came specifically to see the Mary Queen of Scots silver casket, as I love the history of Mary. It was absolutely stunning, and I'm thrilled to have had the opportunity to see it up close . The female staff member inside the room was friendly and took time to have a little chat with me about the casket's weight. The room was not busy, so we had plenty of time to take pictures and have a good browse.

The gallery had other levels downstairs, which were interesting. It displayed a celebration of works including jewellery, ceramics, and drawings from Jessie Marion King.

The cafe was busy, which was a shame as we were all in need of something to eat and drink . The gift shop is located on the ground floor and had some nice items .

The building is pram and wheelchair accessible. We managed to find a car parking space outside without issue . There was no entry charge, so we made a donation instead beside Mary's casket.

I would...

So great to be back visiting yet another fabulous exhibition at the Kirkcudbright galleries. This time it's the Glasgow Boys and Girls. The galleries are well laid out for social distancing. You need to book a one hour slot, but it ensures you have lots of space and time to study the exhibits.

Also a very interesting exhibition on the top floor, showcasing the work of young local artists who have been influenced by the beautiful Dumfries and Galloway countryside, its people and animals. "Irn Ewe" still has us 😅 laughing! The cafe must also receive a mention. Can definitely recommend the...
