I had the pleasure of visiting the Verdant Works Museum and it was truly a wonderful experience. One of the standout highlights for me was meeting Lily, a vibrant Dundee lady in her 80s who volunteered at the museum. Lily shared her firsthand experiences as a mill worker in Dundee from a young age, giving us a unique and personal insight into the industrial history of the city. Lily's demonstration of the machines used in the mills was fascinating, as she operated them with skill and precision, walking us through the intricate process. Her stories of the changing landscape of industrial Dundee added depth and richness to our visit, making it a truly memorable experience. In addition to Lily's invaluable contribution, the museum itself was very well put together. The exhibits were informative and engaging, offering a comprehensive look at the history of the textile industry in Dundee. Overall, the Verdant Works Museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in learning about the industrial heritage of the city. The focus of the Verdant Works Museum in Dundee is the textile industry. It showcases the history and heritage of the jute industry in Dundee, which played a significant role in the city's industrial development. The museum provides insights into the working conditions, machinery, and processes involved in jute production, as well as the impact of the industry on the local community.

Fantastic. Learn all about how jute is grown in India and why it then came to Dundee and became such an important industry. The Verdant Works was built in 1833 and by 1864 had 70 power looms and 2,800 spindles and was employing 500 workers involved in spinning and weaving jute. The industry employed 50,000 in the city at its peak. By 1889 though this mills time as a true textile works is over. The staff are friendly and helpful and it was lovely to see some of the machines working and be able to ask questions. See the architecture of the building from the viewing platforms and enjoy the different displays and the mighty 1801 steam beam engine. There's also a lovely cafe and gift shop though it would have been good to see some more jute made items. We got a combined ticket with Discovery which made it extra good value. Free parking next door for visitors.

This is one of the best museums I have visited. It speaks honestly about the jute industry and this makes it highly contemporary and a tribute to the people who worked there as well as to the city of Dundee. I really liked the focus on the contribution of women and the exploitation of Empire and Colonialism. Really brave. The curation, objects, films and storytelling talk of peoples, places and the harsh realities of 19thC industrialisation and the severity of business competition in the 20thC. You cannot cease to be amazed by the narrative, objects and sheer determination of everyone in this industry. The cafe is great too - and the staff are exceptional. You will not regret a visit here. Indeed, you are likely to return endlessly.

Fantastically presented museum with enjoyable exhibits and a well thought out range of information. The museum has a good balance of exploring the manufacturing processes involved in Jute products, with the evolution of the industry and the lives of those who worked in it. They do a very good job of highlighting the impact of this industry in both Dundee and in India where Jute originates. A very tasteful exploration of both cultures. There are many interactive elements to the museum too, which make it a really approachable and fun place for all ages. Ticket is also valid for a full year which is nice.

The last remaining jute mill in Dundee. We had no idea what a jute did but the guides and staff of this museum explained it in simple terms especially the 82 year old lady who had worked at the mill when it was operational. The exhibits are well set out in a sequence that helps you understand the processes that were carried out to product the jute fibre that was then used to manufacture many things. The café sells excellent sandwiches, soup and other snacks at reasonable prices. The staff were well informed and friendly. A must visit place alongside Discovery when in Dundee.

A well-maintained historical building in Dundee. The mill has a lot to say about Dundee. The volunteer who explained everything was superb and we got a vivid picture of life in the mill in the 18th and the 19th century from the volunteer. Also, very few people know about the 'Dundee-Kolkata' connection, you can find more about this in the mill. Verdant Works was not all crowded when I visited and I don't recommend buying the ticket in advance. There is a small cafe outside the mill too. If you are a student you are also going to get a student discount (Valid ID required)
