Birmingham's LEGO Wonderland | Adults-Only Nights! 🧱✨
Would like to leave a very positive review of our visit we made oh Tuesday 3rd of August. First of all, we enjoyed our visit, our 2 year old absolutely loved it and we would return, but I would like to in particular give a staff member a massive thank you and praise. we had had a longer than planned journey to get to the centre, having travelled down from Sheffield on Monday and finding out that the trams were down on the day. We had to get a replacement bus and then another bus to take us to the centre. We also had our 5 month old with us who desperately needed feeding. I took her out of her pram whilst queueing up to have our tickets checked (we had booked for 1pm and arrived around half past). Well I suffer with really bad anxiety and my baby is breastfed, but needs must, as we had a very impatient toddler who was already losing her patience. A lady who was working in the shop (I thibk she had dark hair? Wearing a lego branded face mask), saw me feeding and came up to me and said "ma'am, you are SUPER WOMAN". Well that made my day, I had a little happy cry to myself. I just wanted to try and personally thank her from the bottom of my heart. We haven't had the best journey with breastfeeding and up until she made that comment I was very anxious and aware that I was being looked at and could feel myself going red with embarrassment. Whoever you are, THANK YOU and I hope this message gets to you. We unfortunately live in a world where such topic is still a difficult one to talk about and you have given me the courage to be able to feed anywhere.
Pros: - Very engaging for the kids - Hardly any queuing to enter! They allocate a time so book in advance! - Lots to do and interact with (the main build room and racing room will be the highlight) - Free rides including the short 4d cinema experience. Some rides and play areas designed for under 5s, then others for slightly older. Caters well for wide age range. - Shop at the end is priced quite well (doubles up as a normal shop) - Worth it for adults too, miniature cities are great and you can go on most or all the rides. - Staff are great, very energetic and right positivity for the 'Lego Experience'. - Parking and transport is a doddle. Lots of free parking, it's right near a tram stop or you walk over to the Palazzo from the main Trafford Centre. Easy peasy. Cons: - On 23rd July 2023 visit they had refrigeration issues so no sandwiches for adults, but plenty for kids (kids sandwich would be fine for adults) so if you're trying to be healthy you're struggling. chicken burger under 400cals was an option I think - On that, aside from a very pink cafe in the Trafford Palazzo there isn't anywhere else nearby to eat. (As it's a seperate building from the main Trafford Centre) - The seating and eating area needs to be twice the size. It's clearly a popular place, and 23rd July was raining so no doubt busy, but it needs to address this soon if continue to be successful. - Drinks Freestyle Coke machine - again, only a third of flavours were an issue. You only find this out after buying the cup.
Updated Review: Visited 26th February 2022 After not visiting many places over the last two years, due to the pandemic, my son asked to return to the Lego Discovery Centre in the Trafford Centre. Expecting something new and some variation of what we had seen before, the experience had not changed, in fact it had got worse. This is not a place for anyone who has children over the age of five! My son is seven now and after going on the introductory ride, watching the 4D movie and going on the Merlin ride, we were done for attractions aimed at his age group. There is a new VR racing game, that has replaced the police car ride which now only has Little Tikes cars for the under 5s, looks good but you have to pay an extra £5 for the pleasure. The LEGO store at the end of the centre is also poor. Missing many of the month’s new releases (which we had to go to John Lewis to purchase), and no real exclusives to make it any more special than a visit to a Smyths. LEGO really needs to overhaul the entire Discovery Centre, as it is dated, in need of renovation and boring for kids over the age of five. Very disappointing LEGO, very disappointing indeed. Star Rating: ⭐️⭐️ Original review from February 2019: My 4 Year-Old son is becoming a HUGE LEGO fan and we thought that this would be a fantastic experience for him and a great way to judge if he would like going to LEGOLAND Windsor. We were not let down. While this is situated in the Trafford Centre near Manchester and is a little restricted by size, LEGO has made the most of the same by filling it with a combination of rides, LEGO activity areas, exhibits, a 4D cinema experience and, as you might expect, a big LEGO Store. This works well for younger LEGO fans (between 3 & 8) as it is all concentrated within a small area and they can see everything they can do. Older children my struggle however, as the rides are made for much younger children and the activities also. It is expensive however, especially for the size of the experience. It’s £16.95 a child and £20.95, if you pay the walk up price but there are offers online or via vouchers and if you live close enough, you can get a yearlong pass. (Under 3s are free and all adults must be accompanied by a child). My son loved his time at the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre and that is the point of any visit. My wife & I really enjoyed it too but be prepared to constantly be moving around as this is a full on experience. Star Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Obviously the kids were entertained, it's Legoland! I was under the impression that only a limited number of people were admitted in grouped time slots so the place didn't become overcrowded. I have 2 disabled children who LOVE lego, we are very limited when it comes to days out & Legoland is generally out of our price range to be honest, but we saved the £100+ & booked online. We arrived within our 15 min timeslot & still had to stand in line for over 20 mins which was made slightly more miserable by the ice cold breeze due to building work to extend the Trafford Centre just outside of the entrance to Legoland. At the ticket desk my 19 year old daughter asked for green lanyards for the boys (Hidden disability awareness for staff) & was ignored! After she listened to the boys talking whilst putting on our wrist bands I asked the woman behind the ticket desk again for the Green lanyards & was handed them with a sympathetic smile 🙄. Initially the kids loved it, the guide took a group of about 15 of us through the first few rooms showing the kids how the lego bricks are made then after 5 mins let us through a door to join the back of another que. 15 mins waiting to get on a 2 min ride to go through to the main room. It was far too overcrowded, too loud & too hot. The boys managed to make a football shirt out of lego with the help of their sisters but every activity station was either overcrowded or the lego needed for the activity was missing, the only other activities were the 2 rides. The jungle ride is a car that the child gets to sit in and navigate around the track twice, less than 2 minutes... for that we qued for just under 30 mins (several meltdowns but point blank refusal to leave the line) it was exhausting & embarrassing! The next ride had a que just as long but there was a separate que for green lanyard wearer's, after a 5 min wait in that que the boys & their sister were turned away & told to join the other que because we didn't have proof of their disabilities (eg DWP or EHCP)! After that we ushered the boys through the space zone, took a few photos and left! In theory its a great place, it definitely needs a better management plan.
So we drove up after staying the night in Stafford to the Arndale Centre to do the last thing on our Merlin Passes. It's worth noting that Sealife is also situated next door to Legoland Discovery centre as well. The centre is the smaller attractions within the Merlin group with a few rides within the centre and a soft play area/activity gym. Also a multitude of lego building areas as well. Currently, a 4D cinema showing a bespoke Lego movie (which was actually pretty long and engaging) and a Lego Batman-themed laser maze round this attraction off as well as an overpriced cafe and the obligatory walk thru the shop exit. Being half term it was pretty packed and the centre was trialling a new system of limiting your time within this attraction (usually a 4-5hr slot). This was noted by the different colour wristbands, although I have to admit I'm not sure how they would actually police it. At the point of entry, we gain with our fast access with our Merlin cards and got in immediately. However, I was aware that "standard" access was about a 1-1.5hrs wait. To encourage you to leave an announcement was made over the tannoy system and that a Ninjago character would be waiting to greet you upon exiting. Door prices are £20/£29 adult and Sealife centre access, but marked reductions available online/advanced bookings. This attraction can be completed within 3-4hrs easily with our 4 and 7-year-old entertained. I would recommend getting the sealife center combo ticket as well if you want to make a day off it/save money. For a rainy day and if you have booked in advanced/have vouchers then it's an ok event, but I could not recommend it for children over the age of 9.
