An absolute hidden gem in the centre of bury St Edmunds. I don't want to post too many photos as it would spoil the wonder of the place but the included post is one of the rarest original pieces in the crime and punishment section, even the Tower of London doesn't have an original.
Either way, onto the experience, upon arriving you get your tickets or have the prepaid ones ready where you can either go in and explore as you wish or seek guidance (I highly recommend talking to those at the entrance, as they will talk with passion about what is available to view).
Our group attended to view the conflict exhibits which were brilliant and some of the pieces were completely unexpected. Such as a weapon allegedly used to kill Bonnie and Clyde along with original pieces from the Battle of Fornham. There are even replica items you can touch, feel and try, which I imagine would be wonderful for children.
As someone who is very keen on historical warfare it was just a wonderful experience and the additional sections were just as fascinating as the conflict aspects. I simply could not recommend...
Read moreWe visited today for the first time, it was me, my partner and our 2 little girls aged 3 and 18 months. We were the first ones in as my daughter was so excited to visit to see the dinosaur exhibition we made sure we got there ready for opening. The 2 ladies who were there were fantastic and are a credit to the museum. We had such a good time and the displays are so informative, my favourite was the crime and punishment room. How fascinating! It's a perfect size museum especially when you have little ones as doesn't take hours to look about so fits well with small children. I hold a masters degree in history and have been an assistant curator and held various other voluntary postistions at museums and I must say, if I lived closer, this museum would be somewhere I'd love to volunteer at! Fantastic and thank you again to the 2 lovely women who made our daughters visit so much better. The gift shop was well stocked and loads of lovely things for small children, we purchased several items. Highly recommend and will...
Read moreWent to see the 'Moments' exhibition. Great exhibition, lovely staff in an architecturally interesting and beautiful building in the heart of Bury St Edmunds. Parking outside is pricey and geared for a short stay, so parked all day in Ram Meadow, a short walk through the town center at a very reasonable price. The reason for only 3 stars is it's not ideal if your concerned about Covid. It was very hard to keep your distance with small spaces, stairs and corridors used for the exhibits. Everyone moves at different speeds which results in bunching up and it really impeded on our experience as your also confined to the one way system. Better timing between visitor's could greatly improve this. Thankfully photography is allowed so I snapped the write ups to read later in order to escape the huddle. I look forward to returning in...
