A nice park right along the Potomac River with a lot to offer the casual visitor This is a park located right below the I495 bridge and within walking distance to many other parks along the Potomac River. It has a large parking lot with over a hundred car parking spots right off Jone’s Point Drive. You can find information about the park on the National Park Service (NPS) website. This park is right at the southernmost point and has a lot of real estate along the water. There is a walking trail to the north along the river with informational signs and displays that describe the sights along the trail. A 10-minute walk will bring you to other parks (Ford’s Landing, Shipyard, and Roberdeaux) and eventually to Old Town Alexandria with its many shops situated along the water. The website states that the park offers a place for fishing piers, a canoe launch, two playgrounds (one for children under age five and one for children ages six to ten), two basketball courts, and multi-use fields. It was a very clean park and the path was well-paved and relatively smooth. It is a good place to park if you are planning to visit Old Town Alexandria and want an easy place to park and enjoy a walk...
Read moreWe really love JPP. The park and bike route is easily accessible, and our entire family loves the location, history and amenities. The only reason I am giving it four/five stars is because of our experience last Friday. I arrived with my two toddlers mid-morning. We rode our bikes for an hour or so, explored the static displays and then the lighthouse. We then proceeded to eat lunch at the picnic tables beneath the bridge. I promised my children we could go to the jungle-jim after our ride and lunch, and of course, they reminded me while we washed our hands in the restrooms adjacent to the tables. When we arrived at the playground there were apr. 20 kids on the equipment. Their parents/caregivers were standing around talking in small cliques or camped out on picnic blankets throughout the space, while their children ran around practically unsupervised, eating on/around the equipment and leaving trails of cheese puffs, chips and other food stuffs scattered throughout. Needless to say, we departed shortly after our arrival. Hopefully some of those parents are reading this and will start to utilize areas of the park more suitable for food...
Read moreOne of the coolest outdoor spaces in the DMV! I discovered this place because of the boxing gym I’m a part of hosts classes here every Sunday 1-3! It is on the waterfront but all of the area under the bridge is a giant parking lot that is no longer accessible to cars. I have seen groups practicing roller skating, a group doing a dungeons and dragons like event, there’s a bball court, kids riding bikes, people practicing karate, yoga, you name it! It’s awesome because it’s all covered, so even if the weather calls for rain, you can still enjoy the outdoors!
There is a long paved trail that (I believe) goes all the way back into DC. It lines the waterfront, has tons of cute stopping points along the way, eventually leads you towards a wonderful sunset, and at night you can see the Ferris Wheel across the Potomac River at the...
