This is a place where the food is on point and delivery and presentation is on par and up to par. I travel around the world looking for places that are not chain or comercial. Tucked away in the historic district of Alexandria VA, southside 815 is scratch kitchen in my opinion that has a simple menu and great choice of that menu, not overbearing or confusing. Upon stumbling across this restaurant I was in the mood of something good and tasty and easy. I started off in the bar where I was kindly greeted by Beverly who has great personality (by the way)😉I asked for recommendations and I was blown away by the response. Of course you know everyone says ?(everything’s good 😌) well being optimistic I went along with the Spiel, a few things caught my attention. As mentioned the menu was simple, drum roll please......... Blackened Catfish garlic green beans rice and mashed potatoes with brown gravy 😋... to be continued ⏰⏰⏰⏰⏰👍 they nailed it waiting was short food was hot and fresh plated properly and very affordable now I will say the portion was Feasible and you know after sitting for a additional minute or 2 I had room for dessert....come to find out they make the dessert in house and not store brought that’s a plus. O yeah I ordered the brownie Sunday 🤤now if you happen to be in the area swing on by to SOUTHSIDE 815 and say hello and sit and relax have a drink enjoy the atmosphere you just might need it. Until next time thanks to all the staff who made my dining experience comfortable and enjoyable. Thanks again.😉

If you live South of Alexandria (Lorton, Woodbridge, etc) do yourself a favor and head down Route 1, make a right on Mt. Vernon Hwy to Route 400 and take a scenic drive to Southern 815. When 400 becomes S. Washington street, you’ll find this gem on your left. They said they had the best Catfish Po Boy on this side of the Mississippi and I believe them. The French roll was so soft and flaky. The catfish fried crispy and seasoned lightly as not to overpower the taste of the fresh fish. If you want to turn it up a notch, take the pickled coleslaw that comes with the meal and put it on top of your Po Boy for a platinum level experience. It came with crispy fries as well. I’ll definitely be visiting again to try other menu items. We also had the fried green tomatoes which rival any I’ve tried in the area. I almost withdrew a star, however, because I didn’t like the peach pound cake at all. But we waited to eat it when we got home. Maybe that affected it. I don’t know. The ice cream was great though which is why I continued on with the five stars.

DC restaurants never cease to amaze me, they almost always delicious and worth it! So, I ended up here for a work event and glad I did! I had an adult beverage, Frickles (fried pickles), low county shrimp and sausage, and the peach pound cake with butterscotch syrup and vanilla ice cream! Frickles- were not made with the traditional dill but the bread and butter version. It was a welcomed surprise and I couldn’t stop eating them! Crispy, salty, sweet, and tangy! Low County Shrimp and Sausage- I chose this fish because I love grits! Am I glad I did, it was marvelous and I ate every bite. One gripe, those shrimps were not from any “low country” I suspect they were from Costco and farmed somewhere in Taiwan… but I don’t have any proof. Dessert- Peach pound cake with ice cream dressed with homemade butterscotch! I wish it would’ve had a better balance of peach pound cake to ice cream, but the butterscotch syrup made the dessert. If I was on death row and this my my last dessert I’d die content!

I had the chicken fried steak, which was pretty good. The greens were a little too vinegary, but ok. Overall the food was fairly good, but the very poor "service" I received warrants this review. The service started out fine at first, but the first time my waiter, an older Asian man, came by my table after my meal was brought out, I was about to ask him something but he raised his hand seemingly as if to dismiss me which was wild to me, then walked away. After that, I sat at my table unattended for idek how long. The waiter repeatedly walked past my table over the course of that time, and looked at me as if he was coming towards me, but instead went outside to tend to another table, then would ignore me when I tried to get his attention. When he finally did come back to my table, I tried to place an order for a dessert TO GO, and also for the bill since I had already been sitting there for so long, he was rude about it. After another long wait, another guy who wasn't my waiter came and slammed my dessert down on the table on regular plating, when I asked for it to go. Still no bill either. I then waited for another 30 or 40 minutes trying to get someone's attention, practically yelling with my hand raised trying to ask for a to go box and my bill, desperately wanting to go home at this point, as multiple people including my waiter walked by and ignored me. I watched several people who came in later than me get a bill before I did. When my waiter decided he wanted to come by my table again, I got a to go box and a bill, but still had to wait idk how long for the waiter to come collect my card, and I had to flag down another person to go bring it to him. Then he forgot to bring me a pen, but thankfully I had my own. It's a shame because my meal was decent, but I will not be back again. I get that waiting can be a tough job and people are busy and understaffed(which they appeared to have enough staff and the restaurant wasn't that packed), but I was disrespected and had my time wasted...

Southside is a semi-regular brunch spot for myself and my friends. Before today I always liked their food but never felt the need to write a review. Today I was very impressed with my stop so here I am finally writing a well deserved review.

I'll start this off by saying that Jake was my server and he did a phenomenal job. I stopped in today because I was on a walk with my dog who clearly wasn't handling the heat well (black haired dog made for cold weather, this Virginia heat isn't his friend). I mostly just needed to find a spot to let him cool down and get water but I would feel bad for taking up a table when they were kind of busy (lunch rush, all of us who have worked as a server/bartender/bar back know how annoying it can be to have a table taken by someone that isn't much of a customer). I had the pulled pork sandwich with fries and coleslaw with a dark and stormy to drink. The pulled pork isn't the style that I'm the biggest fan of since it already had the sauce mixed in but the meat was very well prepared and the sauce had an awesome flavor so I definitely will not complain. The fries were good, not great, but they're just fries. The coleslaw was amazing, a little more would have been nice.

I got my drink quick, my food very shortly afterward. My stay was short but I was very happy with my decision to stop at Southside. So Jake and Southside, my dog, Paddy, and I thank you.

I also highly recommend getting the chicken and waffles if you're ever in at a time that they're serving it. I prefer it without the gravy and put maple syrup and hot...
