As a lifetime resident of Allendale, I hate to see a place that was part of the commons become a place governed by elitist privelaged “nature” lovers. Their used to be a small farm on the lands and as a kid the farmers used to welcome and often engage with much of the community. Dogs were part of any working farm, and certainly a part of the Celery Farm’s history. What irks me, is the prohibition on dogs in the “preserve” for the sake of protecting wildlife. This is a town filled with more and more mansions, large houses, central air, and cars galore for each household... and you think dogs are what’s threatening bird habitats? How about two entire subdivisions that have destroyed large sections of the “preserve” in the last decade and a half. More and more forested land in Allendale are being sold off and destroyed for more houses. Don’t get me wrong about development, I am all for it. Also don’t get me wrong about wildlife conservation, because I am for that as well. But what appears to be an over reaction by a few snooty close minded nature lovers has resulted in more rules being posted at the entrance of the farm. If we are to create a proper place for nature conservation, maybe we should take a harder look in the mirror and see the absurdity in blaming dogs for the extinction of species of rare birds versus our opulent lifestyles. I sincerely hope that members of this town begin getting together to make a more meaningful commitment towards shared spaces, and that means finding spaces inclusive of all family members,...
Read moreCame for a quick little stroll for the first time to check out this quaint location as I am an avid wildlife photographer and brought my service cat with me. I carried her in my arms to the “proposal point” which is not even a 2 minute walk from where you can park. I was abruptly and rudely scolded by the overly proud wild life marshal of the forest who asked me to leave. I drove 15 minutes to this location only to be kicked out 2 minutes later. Such a shame. Marsh Warden Stiles Thomas is the man who is in charge of protecting the wildlife preserve and does not approach the matter kindly. He is arrogant and degrading. I came to enjoy the quiet nature and to get away from people and instead got the exact opposite. It really is a beautiful location though. I cannot wait to come back with my camera and see the Marsh Warden again. I will make sure to remind him of the rude encounter we...
Read moreThis nature preserve is a really beautiful spot to hike. There's a small parking lot near the entrance that can fit maybe 6 or 7 cars, so you might have to park on a nearby street. Beautiful swampy area with several bird watching platforms, benches, and small boardwalks throughout the large loop that surrounds the swamp. There are also a few smaller loops that branch off the larger one. Awesome spot for bird watching. Very relaxing and peaceful, but surrounded by neighborhoods so it doesn't feel too isolated (which for me, is a plus). Highly recommend...
