A recent purchase of 1 bale of straw for mulching a tiny, completely weed-free strawberry bed was a negative experience in every way. I was clearly given the wrong product, lousy hay instead of straw, which resulted in the quick germination of the plentiful seed heads as evidenced by all the green stems emerging. This does not happen with true straw. The stems were thin and soft with loads of seed heads, which is normal for construction or feed hay. I was charged $12, fully twice what I paid for high quality horse hay this year and even what I have in my barn is better quality than the bale Amherst Farmer Supply sold me. The person loading my truck assured me it was STRAW when I said it looked more like hay so I bought it regardless, paying cash and not thinking I’d need to keep the receipt. Being thoroughly disgusted with the results of using this bale in my garden, I expressed my dissatisfaction to the store clerk who was sensitive to my issue and tried to help. The new shipment of straw the store is currently selling looks VASTLY different from what I was sold. It actually is straw. However, the owner would not make ammends for the store’s error. For $12 he just lost a long-time customer. I maybe drop $1 k in that store over the course of a year, so I’m sure they’ll never notice the loss of my consumer dollars , but I WAS a regular and will no longer be, thanks to the miserly nature of the management and their unwillingness to correct their...
Read moreI haven't had a need to buy anything there in a while but stopped by the other day and was charged $53 for a concrete chimney block. Yes, fifty three dollars. It happened that it didn't work for my purpose and returned it. I was charged $5.00 for restocking or handling. I have never been charged for returning anything at Home Depot or Lowe's. Guess where I will keep on shopping? Certainly not at Amherst farmers supply if I...
Read moreThey have good wares, but my repeat experience has been poor customer service. I don't go to a farmer supply store expecting great customer service. At Amherst Farmer Supply, my role is to hand money over and get out. If I ask for advice, ask questions about what I'm buying, or ask to buy something that's been put away, the staff are rude and make it clear that I'm inconveniencing them. I'll switch to Tractor Supply...
