My brotherinlaw (Uncle Bubba) decided to get the whole family together to take my son to this wonderful museum! It may be a bit of a drive but it made for a great day trip. There is a lot of good food in the area as well. The admission is reasonable, parking easy with some shade. They even have a very shaded playground to run off your kids energy before or after the museum. The exhibits are well done and fun. They have something interactive at almost every one! My son is an extremely active 5 year old and didn't get bored once!*score* He got to see his first dinosaur and was in awe! The tour is a reasonable length with lots of seating throughout. If you read everything it's an educational length. If you want to look and go - it's short and sweet (and still worth the price)! If anyone has mobility problems you can get a chair at checkin. As a souvenir Uncle Bubba gave my son a disco snake from the gift shop. Its longer than he is and currently the coolest thing EVER.

I am a local to this museum and I have surprisingly never been here until recently. I have to say I was very surprised. Although there are not a lot of interactive exhibits, it was still a lot of fun. The first part is dinosaur’s, then it leads to a cave exhibit. After that there is a large animal exhibit which was pretty interesting. The last part of the museum is the mummy exhibit. That was definitely the most interesting part. There is an educational video you can watch to get more history behind it which I really enjoyed. After that it leads to the gift shop, then of course the lobby. Overall the staff was nice, and the museum was very clean. I wish there was more interactive parts but it is a natural history museum so it’s more of just stuff to look at. It was a great experience but it’s not a place you would go to a lot; although it is worth a visit.

We have wanted to take the kids here since we moved to the area and free admission day was the perfect opportunity. It was the perfect hot day to do something indoors lol. The air was pumping, the staff was friendly and knowledgeable. They had so much to look at and even a few hands on activities. The prices in the gift shop were not horrible either. Don't skip the Berman building. It has 2 floors full of historical facts and displays perfect for a homeschool kid😉. It took us a little over 2 hours to walk the entire 2 buildings and garden but we are dilly-dalliers. If there's one thing I'm going to do it's dilly dally.

Loved every bit of it! We took our time walking through about 3 1/2 hours and read "almost everything." What we did not have time to read, we took pictures of. I had NO IDEA there were that many types of gazelles. I loved several areas... One of the really unexpected exhibits was of 2 Egyptian mummies that were real and had been at one time taken to the medical center where they did a 64 slice CT scan. You can sit inside the Egypt exhibit and watch the video where they worked with the female from start to finish. If you are in the area and have several hours, I would definitely recommend going through this museum.

I was so pleasantly surprised at the quality and impressiveness of the museum. All of my children, aged 5, 3 and 1, were totally immersed in every display and interactive activity. My 5 year old's favorite area was the caves of Alabama and the dinosaur display. There was a full stegosaurus skeleton, a triceratops skull and a full scale Pteranodon model. My three year old was completely fascinated by the ancient Egypt area and asked me questions about the "mommies" all the way back to Birmingham. All in all, I give this museum five huge stars and plan on going back several times this year!

This is a hidden Alabama gem. I was born and raised here and had no idea this existed. The live animal show was fun and informative. The exhibits are clean and tastefully done. They even have Egyptian mummies! Who knew?? Nice, shady grounds with picnic tables if you want to pack a lunch. My only suggestion would be to hire a PR person and get the word out about this place! Offer summer camps perhaps?? Definitely get into Birmingham Parents magazine. People (in Alabama especially) should know this place exists. Great little day trip for kids and adults alike.
