Known affectionately by locals as "The Center of the Universe" for its central location, Ashland, Virginia, is a town with a character unlike any other, defined by two powerful forces: the railroad and the college. The most defining feature, impossible to ignore, is the busy CSX rail line that serves as the town's spine. Several times an hour, the ground trembles and the air fills with the rumble and whistle of massive freight trains and sleek Amtrak passenger cars passing directly through the heart of the historic downtown. Far from being a nuisance, this constant presence is the town's heartbeat, a beloved spectacle for residents and visitors who gather at trackside cafes and benches to watch the show. This unique railroad culture is seamlessly blended with the life of Randolph-Macon College, a historic liberal arts institution founded in 1830. The college's beautiful campus is not separate from the town but woven directly into its fabric, with academic buildings, dormitories, and athletic fields sitting just steps from the shops and homes of Railroad Avenue. This integration infuses Ashland with a vibrant, youthful energy, creating a dynamic community that is both a quaint, historic village and a lively college town. The result is a charming destination where you can browse unique boutiques, enjoy a meal at a local restaurant, and experience a powerful piece of America's industrial heritage all in the same afternoon stroll.

It looks so small from the outside, but there is a surprising amount of room inside. It is chock full of well-done exhibits of the Ashland area, including maps, photos, dresses, furniture, etc. There are two toy trains to play with for kids of all ages. There is a wonderful 1926 red caboose that is their outdoor exhibit. There are for sale history books for adults and children, Ashland Christmas ornaments, DVDs on Ashland's history and on the special program called Untold Stories. Even colorful vintage tomato can labels for Ashland Tomato Farm from the turn of the century. Just a...
