(Spelman Grad class of 2018)
While attending Spelman, itâs easy to just go through the motions of being around by nothing less than the top intelligent and beautiful black young women for all over America and the world, and prominence of Black culture, how easy it is to accomplish your goals, and the eye-opening coursework of all majors. Itâs easy to complain about 1-2 freshmen dorms that donât have a/c, visitation policies, tuition cost, workload, etc.
But itâs once you graduate from Spelman where itâs difficult to disconnect. Spelmanâs campus itself is a geographical bubble, a safe heaven for young black women to become educated, learn about themselves, network, and feel safe for yourselves and family (idk who those lil girls were who did the hate crime of assaulting LBGTQPAI+ members but they were heavily frowned upon from the institution and 99.999% of students and professors).
For me, after graduating and being forced to move out permanently, without a lottery for next yearâs dorm was truly an eye-opening of how attached Iâve become while going through the motions. I donât want to state everything Bc a lot about Spelman community is sacred to Spelmanites.
Nevertheless, thereâs no place like Spelman, my advice for future/ current students is to never get caught up in the small trials that you face in this school, bc itâs nothing compared to the âreal worldâ that youâll face once you graduate or (god forbid) drop out.
The tuition cost is a huge turn off for many, and I understand why in todayâs economy. But youâre one of the few who gets accepted, definitely do not turn it down. When it comes to Spelman v. Harvard/Columbia or some other PWI ivy league institution, at least at Spelman youâll be appreciated, and any frustration you receive from others on campus is coming from a place of love and empowerment ( and not race bias).
I come from a (very) low-SES background, and as a graduate of THE illustrious Spelman College, the $116k in debt was well worth it, and id NEVER wish to replace my education here with some from a state, community college or PWI...

Ask them how and where they are now? Has this school helped them any?
Were they part of the perpetual 40% (quoted 2019, BEFORE the pandemic) of Spelman alum who graduate without any prospects? (This number EXCLUDES the grads who planned on going to Spelman only to get an MRS degree. This EXCLUDES students who went into higher education. This number EXCLUDES students who didn't want a job but instead started their own business post-graduation. 40% of students graduate either without a job or without any of the above, because this school caters to legacies and nepo babies. I'm happy for those students, but this school is doing a severe disservice to...
Read moreI am a parent of a freshman. The Spelman administration does a terrible job in completing studentsâ records and getting students paperwork together in an efficient manner. My daughter sent her transcripts multiple times when she would follow up she was given multiple contacts which none of them were helpful or at least remove the transcript hold so she could register. She has been giving the run around because the people in the office punts responsibility in doing their job. I wish I could blame it on COVID however after my daughter has talked to upper class students this is how the school operates. Spelmanâs bloated, inefficient administration. With such a small student body, high tuition and massive endowments one would think Spelman wouldnât...
