I liked this place a lot, but i really don’t like that i can’t bring a cup of coffee in. I also don’t like that I can’t access Github because of their network security rules - one of the largest developer educational tools in the world.
Update: I genuinely appreciate you taking the time to respond. I'm very aware of the risks involved with having drinks near electronics.
However, I brought my own laptop - so I think this is the least of your concern. My intent was to sit at a table, drink my coffee, and work, but as soon as I walked in the door I had a young lady say to me "No drinks or food allowed in the library." I was in a rush to get some stuff done so I quietly left and went home, a little frustrated and confused.
I also understand it might require some monitoring on the staff's end to enforce that nobody leaves an area without electronics and brings their food or drinks near the public machines, but I would prefer an in-between solution that allows for people who have brought their own machines or are just sitting at a table, to have a covered drink. I'd be happy to continue this conversation if you would like to update and add your email to the thread. I look forward to finding a middle ground solution as this branch is 5 minutes from my house, and I love supporting public libraries! I'll also be happy to update my review upon reaching an agreeable solution for...
Read moreI’m currently studying for the Bar Exam and needed a change of scenery, so I decided to try this library. When I arrived, I walked around looking for a place to sit, but unfortunately couldn’t find any open spots. Not wanting to leave after making the drive, I noticed the children’s area was empty and had space where I could set up my laptop, so I figured I’d sit there temporarily.
Shortly after, a staff member approached me and, in a noticeably condescending tone, asked, “Do you have a child?” It was clear I was alone, but I explained I had walked around and just needed a quiet space to study. She simply said, “This is for children strictly,” and turned around without offering any alternative or assistance. I wished her a good day and left.
While other reviews mention helpful staff, that wasn’t my experience. I was in the children’s area, so I’ll take responsibility. It was my first time there, and I didn’t realize how strict the rules were when it came to that space, even when there is no where else to sit. Ultimately, it’s not just what you say—it’s how you say it. I found it kind of funny that she talked to me like I was a child, but then still made me leave because I’m an adult. If you’re looking for a quiet place to study with desk space and friendly, supportive staff, I’d recommend trying a...
Read moreIt’s a warm and welcoming environment, every time my daughters and I step foot in the West End branch. It’s the only AFPL I’ve been in that meets all of my children’s needs. They go there to play with some of the unique educational toys that are available, read a variety of books that they do an exceptional job of rotating and showcasing, use the computers to complete online homework as well as the abundance of school/arts and crafts supplies we use regularly for written homework assignments.
In addition to the aforementioned, we’ve enjoyed numerous educational and informative programs that are held there. We’ve had the opportunity to see live reptiles, learn healthy tips about nutrition (and take home healthy foods), and one of my daughters learned how to sew there via a non-profit sewing class!
I cannot express any more how much of a gem this beach is to the West End, Atlanta community. They have a world class staff who even sometimes offer clothing and shoe donations to...
