I cross Bayonne Bridge daily on my way to work from Jersey City to Bay Ridge Brooklyn. I am an early starter so I cross the Bridge at 5 am. Very few souls crossing the bridge at that time. Its easy driving. I finally took the opportunity to cross the bridge on foot. What a great place for a late afternoon stroll. It is a healthy walk from the Bayonne side to Staten Island. The views of Staten Island, Bayonne, and Manhattan are just great. If you walk over the bridge at the right time you can see an oil tanker or two passing under the bridge being guided by tug boats. Once on the Staten Island side of the bridge don’t just turn around to finish your walk. It is worth the time to walk a few blocks to get an Italian ice or some ice cream from Ralph’s before crossing the bridge back to Bayonne. If you have a lot of time, you might want to walk to Denino’s Restaurant for dinner before turning around on your way back to Bayonne. Exercise, dinner and a wonderful view of the NY area a great time in the making; of course be prepared to take pictures so you seal the memories to share...
Read moreThis bridge would have gotten a 5 Star rating if not for the ridiculously long and elevated heights this bridge can reach. I do like it's modern and clean look, it is definitely an alternative to get to Staten Island, NY from Bayonne, NJ or vice versa. I like to ride my bicycle a lot and this bridge allows for me to travel to Jersey City, Hoboken and other areas nearby. The Light Rail HBLR can be taken at 8 Street Station if you like that, there are the NJT buses that run in the area but don't use them so I can't tell you much about it until I do. The Bridge is highly important to commuters like myself who can't always afford to pay transit and want to avoid criminal activities by cycling which is actually healthy and more peaceful than a crowded bus or subway. Bayonne Bridge is a beacon of the NYNJ Ports and offers some truly iconic sceneries from its peak, to my West is the skyline of Bayonne, and other nearby areas, you can see them ports, cargo ships and to my right you see the Imperial skyline of NYC from Midtown, Downtown, and...
Read moreThis bridge is not an pedestrian allowed bridge and if you risk taking a bicycle on this bridge, you will have to share the narrow road deck with speeding cars. The design is beautiful and the most unique shaped of all the NYC bridges. Rust, sadly, is everywhere and the structure looks unsafe, the maintenance needs including the obvious repairs needed apparently go largely unnoticed despite the day to day tolls we pay to use it. One final note, originally the bridge was lit by a double row of beautiful metal halide (bluish white) lamps. Some time after 9-11-01 the bulbs colors were altered to light as red, white, blue as a memorial I believe. More than a decade has past, I miss the original lamp colors. They lit the road deck better and were much brighter in the evening. I recommend visiting the bridge at least once and decide for yourself. I still love the...
