It’s opening night
Rent was amazing,
“No Day But Today (And No Laughs Were Denied)” after seeing Rent at the GhostLight Theatre, Benton Harbor
We cruised to Benton Harbor with purpose and flair, To see Rent at GhostLight — great theater was there! Nestled downtown with its charming old glow, GhostLight’s a gem putting on one heck of a show.
The lobby was cozy, the vibes? Pure delight. The popcorn? Delicious. The staff? Outta sight. We found our red seats, the house lights went low, And just like that — we were deep in the show.
Mark had his camera, filming his pain, While Roger wrote songs (and complained in the rain). Mimi spun in fishnets, quite the wild dancer, And Angel stole scenes like a Broadway romancer.
Joanne had sass, and Maureen had a cow — Literally, folks — it’s performance art now. Collins made us cry, Benny made us scoff, Yet we still cheered when he tap-danced off.
The cast was electric, the music? A blast, Every scene better than the one that just passed. And sure, it’s a warehouse turned magic stage light, But GhostLight Theatre? It feels just right.
It’s raw and it’s real, and the walls seem to hum With the ghosts of all shows past, present, and some. You don’t need Times Square or a million-dollar set, GhostLight in Benton? One of the best we’ve seen yet.
So thank you, Jonathan Larson, and thank you, whole crew, For reminding us all to live loud and true. Because nights like this, where art finds its way — There’s no day but today. And we’re glad we...
Read moreThis is a super charming new theater in Benton Harbor. The area doesn't have an overabundance of theater options that I've found so it a was great see one so thoughtfully run.
The first thing you notice is that they use the space very well. You walk into it and there's a refreshment area with a few options at very reasonable prices. After that you see some merchandise for sale in the same area. The ticketing area is to the right where I had the chance to meet the artistic director, Paul. Once you go into the theater there's lots of available seating around. It's a black box style theater, with the audience pretty close to the stage, which is nice for those with vision or hearing difficulties.
The performance itself was top notch! Clybourne Park was funny & poignant, with a minimalist, one room setup. The acting really brought all the characters to life. I was very entertained. Lastly, the theater seems to be doing some great things for the community. They have a camp for kids in the summer and Paul seems to have a promising vision for the future of the space. Can't wait to see what's in store for this theater in the...
Read moreI'm in the area visiting family, and was looking up events going on. I was pleasantly surprised to learn about the Ghostlight Theatre, and excited to see that they were going to be performing Rocky Horror. I've always wanted to see this live, so at 6am on Monday, I impulse bought the last ticket for the Wednesday showing.
Omg, I was completely blown away ! The casting was so on point, vocals heavenly, and acting 10/10. You could tell that every single person loved being there. Sure, the place is small, but that's the point, and it was perfect. They utilized every inch of that space, and delivered a performance I'll always remember. I will definitely be checking events here whenever I'm in town !
(Also, shout-out to Sam Donoho. I was not expecting to see someone I went to school with, but it's good to see you're still on...
