I have now done several rooms from a handful of companies, so my rating is in comparison to those other Escape rooms.
I have now done 2 rooms at Escape Room Brunswick, “Room 101” with 8 and “The Attic” with 4. I have enjoyed both experiences and had fun with the group I was with and escaped both. The rooms both contained enough puzzles to challenge and keep you busy. One thing I really enjoyed is one you book a room they block off the rest, so you get to experience the room with only your group. I however do have some constructive criticism to for them to improve the experience.
First both times the room was not set up correctly, and the game master had to enter the room and stop our experience to correct the mistake. I know mistakes happen, but I have never seen this in any rooms I have done and now it happened here both times. This can NOT happen, this really tarnished the experience and impression of the operation. They need to implement a system so this never happens, have checklist or buddy check something but the room MUST be set up correctly.
Second is the clues and support, my experience is the teams normally have 3 clues in the 60 minute room. Generally, the team must agree and ask for the clue to help them. Both rooms I have done here the game master was overly zealous and would confirm or assist with puzzles, without the team asking. Also, my other experiences your lead into a room then reminded nothing in ceiling or carpet etc. In both cases our game master actual gave away hints to the room. Examples, where to start, things not to touch, all the locks this type, the layout of the overall puzzle (no red herrings, linear). This again takes away from the experience of working though the puzzle and reward of solving it. This was magnified after completing a room and comparing our time to the posted room record only to have the game master chime in and say, “That was without hints, and I gave you some.” The post room conversation this was the biggest comment we never ask for help but often was given it. This can be improved by having a system where the team asks for the hint. Make the experience about the room and the puzzles in it, the game master should not be a memorable part. It might be a coincidence but on a busy night the staff was complaining about being busy and stressed about it, that we finished the room with plenty of time left?
Finally, these rooms are designed for up to 8 people, well having done 2 of the rooms ideal size is 4. Doing Room 101 with 8 people there where many times where 4+ people where just watching what was going on. 8 people in one room is a...
Read moreMy 3 friends and I decided to do the getaway and were not expecting what we experienced. We knew it was going to be a little scary, but there were jump scares everywhere. Each of us had different jump scares happen to us but we loved it. So many screams and laughter happened in that room. We had tons of fun and wish we could experience the whole thing for the first time again. The room was put together better than you could imagine. We asked if we could get the recording of us doing the escape room because of how funny our reactions were and how much fun we really did have. The owner has been phenomenal at trying to send us the recording. If you like an adrenaline rush like my friends and I, this room is definitely for you. Only thing I didn't like, was when we bought one of their online rooms. We were supposed to get emailed a code but did not receive one. Spoke to Roland on the phone and he didn't know what was going on. We eventually got refunded that night.
