I was very lucky to start my grappling journey at McVicker Martial Arts some 1.5 years ago. One regret I have in my BJJ journey is that I did not it start earlier (because of a combination of fear and self-doubt). That being said, I could not have asked for a better place to start my BJJ journey. The classes are generally split as follows: 2-3 min warmup, about 30 minutes JKD/boxing/kali sticks, 30 min BJJ drills and 15 min open mat. The beginner’s classes are held every Tuesdays (5.30 p.m.) and Saturdays (10 a.m.), which should accommodate most people. My training partners were as diverse as they come: different age, sex, built, physical capacity, grappling/wrestling experience, ambition to compete (or not). The atmosphere was very laid-back, and everyone was respectful of each other. The main coach is Jack McVicker. Coach Jack is a down-to-earth person with a positive outlook on things. In addition to being a high-level competitive grappler, he genuinely cares for his students and always preaches taking care of each other. Coach Jack frequently draws analogies between BJJ and life, and constantly reminds us where we started and how far we have come in our grappling journey. This is a tremendous confidence boost in itself. In short, the academy provides a platform to toughen up physically and mentally, all in a supportive atmosphere. The staff – coaches Mark, Peter, Mike and Lew – are all high-level martial artists, knowledgeable, patient and helpful. I am very happy I got to interact with them! Whenever I am back in Champaign, a trip to the McVicker academy will be on the list of things to do...
Read moreI've been training at McVicker's Martial Arts academy for over 2 years, and I have to say it's been an incredible experience. The coaches are highly skilled and knowledgeable, and their passion for the art of Brazilian Jiujitsu is infectious. They have helped me grow both physically and mentally as a martial artist, and I've learned so much under their guidance.
The sense of community at McVicker's Martial Arts academy is also a standout feature. Over the past 2 years, I've had the opportunity to train with other experienced students who have pushed me to improve my skills and reach my goals. I've made lifelong friends in this community, and I feel like I'm part of a family.
Overall, I highly recommend McVicker's Martial Arts academy to anyone interested in Brazilian Jiujitsu, regardless of their level of experience. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned practitioner, the academy offers world-class instruction and an inclusive community that will help you reach your full potential. Thank you, Coach Jack, for an unforgettable 2 years...
Read moreI trained with the McVicker team in Champaign from the end of 2021 until just recently in 2024 when I moved out of town (to North Carolina). The culture and environment coupled with Jack's expertise is truly unmatched. Being a former collegiate athlete, you get to see different types of coaching styles and some are better than others. The way Jack and the coaches are able to take their years (25+) of experience and make it understandable to someone off the Steet with no background OR help the ones trying to be professional fighters and everyone in between is truly a remarkable feat. It is certainly an 'it is what you make it' situation but the more you give, the more the McVicker gym gives back. This brand is truly a diamond in the rough and for the value there is nothing like this, anywhere. Jack and Team are the best for all levels of martial arts aspirations and if you are nearby one of Jack's gyms, there is no reason to...
