OVERALL A MISERABLE SHOPPING EXPERIENCE! This Store is located on the shopping center located on Maybank Hwy and Bohicket Road. Originally a Piggly Wiggly Store which was OK, then acquired by SE.Grocers under their Bi-Lo brand which was "sort of OK" and then...acquired by Lowes Markets who re-opened as KJ's Market. Unfortunately the high standards associated with Lowes Markets seemingly do NOT apply to the "poor sister" KJ's band. Custom Service Desk is barefly manned unless one if prepared to "holler for service"... with luck maybe TWO check-outs in operation out of seven (due to a lack of business) and the surly demeanor of the duty Manager is matched by the unwelcoming attitude of their sole Spervisor who seems to be on check-out duty most times due to staff shortage.
"Welcome to Misery!" Very irritating is their absolute demand that ID be shown with the purchase of any alcoholic beverage.even by folks who are clearly well over the age of 21.
Fresh produce selection, freshness and pricing is very variable as comped with the bustling, energized and motivated Food Lion Market just 2+ miles distant!
Peak hours check-outs (three if you are lucky) seem to be manned by local High Schoolers seeking extra cash and, I assume, a starting point on their Resume.
As it stands now.... KJ's seems to be on corporate "life-support" presumably depending on.a surge of NEW business from now housing developments now being rapidly completed and sold in the immediate area. All I can say to KJ's Corporate Leadership is: GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER NOW BECAUSE IF YOU DON'T "FOOD LION" WILL DESERVEDLY SECURE THAT BUSINESS..
UPDATED ON MAY 25TH 2022:
Based on my recent visit to this Store on May 24th I seems that KJ's Corporate Management positively reacted to my original 2-Star review!
Store interior was "sparkling" with shelves in all aisles pretty much stocked and numerous front-of-house merchandise bins with "Specials" .
I visited the store around 11:30am and for the first time in a long time , two checkouts in operation manned by, I believe, new hires one of whom by the name of Stephanie checked me out with friendly and smiling efficiency.
.Based on the above observations, a high 3-Star rating would be appropriate. While appreciating the improvements, why not select a wider choice of "quality" beers and wines at deep-discounts more in line with Total Wine? The will give you a competitive edge over Food Lion while stimulating your sales of wine and microbrews.
FRESH VEG? Why not feature locally grown produce?
UPDATE FRIDAY JULY 29th 2022 APPROXIMATELY AT 9:00AM
A totally miserable, aggressive and rude CSR named Tammy, wearing a white shirt (presumably a "supervisor") made ZERO effort to display any type of customer service respect and more so when I also wanted to have my LOTTO ticket processed along with my grocery purchases. YOU WILL HAVE TO GO OVER TO THE CUSTOMER SERVICE COUNTER AND WAIT UNTIL I CLEAR THIS LINE BEHIND YOU . Her belligerent demeanor was duly noted by the customer behind me who also had a Lottery ticket purchase and commented that "her" attitude...
Read moreI have the unfortunate situation where I work in the same plaza as KJ's. It feels like I'm in a food purgatory between the market and poor quality restaurants.
The food selection is subpar (another reviewer mentioned the scrambled eggs tasted burnt; (that wasn't a freak incident.) and they can't seem to figure out that it's a step in the right direction towards good customer service to have more than two people on the registers. I can say how many times I walked in and walked right back out because there were so many people in the checkout lines.
I buy food there sparingly, leaving the primary things I do purchase there being beer and paper products. Oh, how I wish they would convert this store to Lowes. I'm done with KJ's after seeing the lines backed up again today. Shame on whoever makes the schedule, they really should know better. This is not just my perspective, many of my peers...
Read moreA hidden gem on John's Island. Great independent grocery store with a wide variety of items and hard-to-find food ingredients. A great hot deli section with wonderful lunch menu items prepared daily. There is a good variety of organic fruits and vegetables but not always the freshest (but I'll admit I'm comparing to local farmer's markets). Best grocery store on John's Island. The staff is the best in a food store and is locally owned. The staff is knowledgeable and eager to help assist their customers without feeling as though it's a chore. It's just an overall solid store for quality food. Good produce, butcher, hot & salad bar. No reason to shop at any other food store on the island. Absolutely the best staff and quality of foods in one food store at prices that...
