Wyndham Garden Washington DC Area — Attraction in Cheverly

This hotel gets a 1 star review only because I have to choose at least 1 to leave the review. My check in started by not being greeted. Staff had to put away their phone to take care of me. He mumbled and didn’t speak to me. He took my ID without telling me while I was getting out my credit card and I had to ask for it back. We took our luggage on a cart to the elevator that was far too small to be up to code. No certificate posted either! We both struggled to wedge the cart in and the other had to wait for the elevator to come back because there wasn’t room for both of us. Half of the hallway had water stained carpet like there had been a recent flooding issue, on both floors. There was wiring running along the ceiling in the hallways, fed out through holes in the wall—definitely not up to code or safe!! The floor in our room was dirty. I went to put some things in the fridge that I noticed had been left open so I pulled it out to make sure it was plugged in and was drenched in water from my knees down!! I called to have it corrected and the phone was so full of static I couldn’t make out anything being said! Maintenance eventually came to the room and replaced the unit and only mopped up the pools of water with a dirty rag so floor was wet and dirty. (No offer to discount the room, move us, nothing—not even an apology!! Just an eye roll and head shake when informed the door of the unit was open when we arrived.) While waiting for this to be dealt with, I noticed the metal bed frame sticking out under the dust ruffle—it’s sharp and out 4 inches from the end of the mattress as it ls made to have a footboard attached—if my husband who take blood thinners would have bumped his leg against this, we’d have been searching the nearest ER for treatment!!! Yet another safety hazard and we’d been here less than 45 minutes!!! We went to try to find some food—(almost no food venues in 3 mile radius had indoor seating and there were metal bars across the windows making retrieving food difficult and the amount of police presence in the area was unnerving) and grabbed a snack from the vending machine on the way back to the room—the packaging was wet and torn so it leaked onto my hand. I immediately went to the front desk to request a refund and was told it’s not hotel property. I argued until my $1.50 was returned—yes, argued for several minutes with TWO staff members for $1.50!! I went back to the room and found a blue wet, sticky ring on my night stand, presumably from a slushy cup—this was the last straw!! We didn’t feel safe with the wires and the unclean area and this made me feel like the room was not cleaned after the previous guests so we immediately began a search for a new hotel in the area and went back to the lobby to request a refund where I was told it was past the cancellation window and they would not be able to refund my stay—there was no stay!!! I was given the business card of the manager to call the next day between 8am and noon on Friday—that’s it? Only works for 4 hours a day?? This place was a literal nightmare. They are not owned by Wyndham, only pay for licensing but I will be contacting Wydham USA as well. I have never seen a Wyndham location in such a disaster nor been treated so poorly by staff. This is a name I trust when traveling but not anymore!! Highly recommend avoiding this...

I'm here now and Just wanted to leave this review while I'm thinking about it.

Pros: the staff are really outstanding. Check-in was a breeze. 3 EV charging stations. Breakfast was better than most free breakfasts at hotels at this level. Plenty of parking. Large room. Restaurant next door (although I felt it was overpriced). Daily housekeeping. I love that they put flooring down in the room. I always feel like it's cleaner. And my floors felt squeaky clean. The bed was firm but comfortable, could use at least two more pillows, lots of plugs. Full length mirror, mini-fridge, microwave, safe, and I personally liked the lighting in the room. It made me look pretty. =) (front lighting instead of overhead.) Nice toiletries, better than usual blow dryer. The best pro is the TV has HDMI ports, nearby plugs, and the ability to change HDMI ports on the remote. So you can bring your own Roku/Fire stick, etc.

Cons: there's not much around within walking distance, just one restaurant and one gas station. I wouldn't call the neighborhood sketchy but I would call it not the best. The hotel is extremely old and tired. My Lyft driver told me it used to be a Howard Johnson's, which really explains a lot. I do think the hotel put some effort into making it better, but it's a lipstick on a pig situation. But it wasn't bad enough for me to want to leave - it might be for some. I did not like being put on the first floor which is downstairs from the lobby. I felt like I was in the basement. There are no ice machines on the first or second floor, the third floor ice machine was broken, the fourth worked and I didn't check the fifth. The bathroom is small, but not tiny (depending on your perspective). Two people could still get ready in there. OMG the elevator is so teeny weeny. Luckily I never had a problem getting an elevator or the elevator being too full. No hand towel rack. It can get a little noisy in the hallways, but I didn't hear any TVs or talking from adjacent rooms.

I guess the central air in these rooms, or at least in my room, doesn't work. So they had a secondary unit with an exhaust pipe going out the window. It wasn't problematic, just strange. It's a little loud for those who are bothered by that kind of thing. But it doesn't bother me.

Note that the gas stations, CVS, Walgreens all do not sell liquor, beer or wine around here. I couldn't find a grocery store that sold it either, but I went to budget grocery stores that were close by. But there are plenty of liquor stores around, just not walking distance.

If you happen to be going to a show at EchoStage, which is why I flew up here, it's only an 8 minute Uber ride away!

If dispensaries are your thing, there are several within close-ish driving distance.

About 15 minutes from the hotel is an amazing African restaurant called Spice Kitchen. Order ahead if you can.

All in all, I felt safe, and it was a place to lay my head, with all necessities included. If your tastes aren't terribly discerning, you will survive your stay here just fine. I probably won't stay...

Myself and my daughter recently spent the weekend in room 133. To be fair I was pleasantly surprised by how spacious and clean our room was. My only complaint is with the housekeeping staff. I remained in the room for entire day, housekeeping banged on my several times after having been told their services were not needed. What really got me irked was I locked the latch lock on my door. The last time housekeeping come to my door they were thrusting things through the door to unlatch the lock once again disturbing me. I again walked to the door and this time yelled out loud as I could without screaming that housekeeping services were not needed. I called the front desk to report the incident as I thought it to be extremely strange. I spoke with a manger named Tammy who asked if I wanted to be moved to another room???? I simply told her I wanted housekeeping to go away and to stop disturbing me. I checked out on Monday September 16 having been rushed I accidentally left 2 expensive bracelets sitting on corner of tub. I realized this almost immediately upon leaving. I called the front desk sick about leaving my bracelets behind. I was somehow disconnected several times while placed on hold to speak with a manager. I was eventually told a manager was not on duty and when the manger came in Tuesday morning I would receive a return call so after having filed a police report I headed home to PA. Tuesday morning I never received a call so I called early afternoon. I was told again no manger on duty but the General Manager would return my call Wednesday Sept. 19 again never received that call. I called early afternoon and was told the General Manager didn’t come in due to an emergency and I would receive a return call by Friday morning Sept. 21. We shall see if that call ever happens. I know the hotel manger/housekeeping manager knows who cleaned our room therefore they know who has my bracelets however so far they refuse to do the right thing and recover my bracelets. Monetary value I’m guessing around 600 however they were gifted by a partner who is no longer with us so sentimental value is priceless. I’m so sick 🤢 about it. Yes my fault for leaving them behind but who would think they wouldn’t be turned in by housekeeping for me to recover. The fact that housekeeping tried so hard to enter my room the day before speaks volumes. I don’t recommend booking accommodations at this particular Windham location especially if you...
